The outside of the head bolt is round and smooth.. it's something like a torque bit..female with serrated edges on the inside.

Thanks guys...I found one today. Got it from the Matco tool guy. It's a 12mm 12 point hex bit-1/2 drive. He knew exactly what I was talking about. He even new it was for a Toyota. Tried the Snap On guy 1st. He knew what it was too, but didn't have one in stock. He refered me to the Matco guy. He just happens to live a few blocks from me. Kinda pricey though. $39.90 with tax(9%)...
Damn! I can't believe Toyota dicked me around like that. What a waste of time....

fancy name for a torx bit on a stick...

and its a SST 09043 - 38100 per the manual. (Page EM-71)

and just cause you desribed it doesn't make it right... and doesn't mean torque bit wouldn't work... i kno people that use 12mm allen keys and get away w/ that working too

yeah, I gave the Toyota guys that part #...for what its worth.. and they still didn't come thru...
They tool guys did show me some other bits that were really close, but I wanted it to fit perfectly snug. can you imagine stripping out the bolt while it's still in the head... what a nightmare and hassle. anyway, I got what I needed.. Matco part # CQL12M2B
and get this, he described the difference between the Asian and European versions..
Asian= double hex bit... hex=6 sides x 2 = 12 points.
European= 3 squares =4 sides x3=12 points

The only difference is the angle of the points...

yea... it was a guy from Europe that used the 12mm allen key... it didn't grab all 12 points... but it did come out w/o stripping it.

i understand your concern for the right tool.

but thats why god invented drills and locking extractors
