I gutted my cat weeks ago, and every since at high RPMs AFTER i boost and let off the gas i get a big puff of white smoke. It doesnt smoke at idle, or normal driving, or even little boosting. I can go WOT and see no smoke, hit 7kRPM and throw it in neutral and....PUFF.....cloud of white smoke. If im racing and shifting fast at high RPM, it doesnt seem to smoke at all. ANy clue as to what my problem is??? Compression test yeilded 180-180-180-180 Gen 2 3sgte in 91 mr2.
Is there a way to test this, or to find out if thats what it is or not? I was worried it may be a head gasket. At 1st i thought i blew a piston ring, but compression is perfect. Also i have a manual boost controller, and it WAS working fine. All of a sudden my boost went from 14-15 to like 18. I turned my boost controller all the way down, and it didnt make a difference. Turned it all the way up, and still didnt make a difference. It only boost that high in 4th and 5th gears. 1st-3rd it goes to about 15-16psi.
Also my car sputters alot during idle, but not when driving unless im under load in a gear and just let off the gas, then you can hear that unburned gas muffled poping sound. I get alot of black smoke under boost, but i was told thats normal as the MR2 runs rich.
Also my TPS threw a code, and i got a new one. I didnt know how to adjust it, or test it, so just took the old one off, and installed the new and turned it untill it sounded ok. Can this be a problem? I would like to take my car to a shop and get it worked on, but dont know if they know the proper way to set up the TPS for a MR2.
Also... I blew a knock sensor while running at the track, BUT.... It still makes full boost. Its very sluggish at low RPM, but as soon as it hits about 3k RPM....WHAM.... she takes off like a bat out of hell. I thought the ECU throws the car into limp mode, and not be able to boost like over 9lbs?
I have a trunk mount set-up, and have a greddy BOV on the intercooler pipe. I have it vented to intake, but can still hear it!?!?!.....hmmm..... I would like to maybe put the stock one back on, or maybe a good aftermarket. I want to get good mandrel bend piping made also, as I have just exhaust piping for temperary use. Where to install the BOV?
How to check for boost leaks?
How to check for vaccum leaks? I think I have one, or both problems.
Sorry for so many questions, but I am almost fed up with my mr2.
ok since you gutted the cat it sounds like you are getting oil build up in the cat and since it is gutted the cat is tryin to clean its self like it is designed to do.... inside the cat there is a short burn to burn out all of the residual hydrocarbons and carbon build up in the catlist... since that isnt there now it is just burning the oil that is in there... that is why it is white smoke...
I live in burlington, near camden. Just moved here not long ago from MD.
Well like Jekyl and hyde said, blue smoke is oil burning inside the combustion chaimber, and white smoke is oil burning either on the exhaust side of the turbo, or in the exhaust. So it has to be leaking from the turbo since thats the only oil source that would spit the oil into the exhaust.
I blew the oil seal in my CT26 and lots of oil went in both directions-into the turbine and into the compressor side forcing it thru the IC pipes. The sudden addition of all the oil entering the combustion chamber caused my head gasket to breach and then coolant was pumped into the cylinders. what a mess.
Like the Doc said, it will only get worse. I pushed mine really hard(very stupid)doing something very stupid and it disintigrated..causing me a world of problems. Luckily I have my Spyder and Tacoma 4x4 to still get around.
So the oil seal needs to be replaced in your turbo.
How can i tell if it is the turbo seal? Also is it possable to have just the exhaust side seal leak? I put a catch can on, and it doesnt collect anything. The motor/turbo only has 40k miles.
The seal is in the center between the compressor wheel and turbine wheel. If there is evidence of oil on either side(compressor or turbine) there is a leak.
if it's leaking on the turbine, it gets so hot the oil will burn up in no time. On the compressor side, just remove the intake hose there and have a look to see if there is oil. A little bit is normal. But idealy, both sides should be dry.
w/ a gutted cat you can get used to smoke and smell... its normal. your not cleaning the air anymore.
typically blue smoke comes from oil.
when i follow my boys RX7 w/ a gutted cat i need to wear a gas mask. hes got white, blue, purple, pink, yellow and every other color under the rainbow coming out that thing
My primary cat is gutted, but I do still have the secondary in place. I don't have ANY smoke coming out, but the gasoline smell is there. Some guys ask me if I'm running race fuel on the street...
