2nd Generation Idle Issues

Hey All,

For the past several months my idle has been bouncing/hunting between 1k and 2k. She didn't get driven through most of the winter which is why the problem had existed for so long. I have been researching the forums and found some common causes: Stuck / Malfunctioning ISCV, Air in the Coolant, Corroded Ground Points. All of these check out okay. The Vaccuum hoses appear fine as well.

After printing out the diagnostics section of the BGB ( 2nd Gen NA ) I called my father in law over and I shorted TE1 and E1 while he watching for the flash codes. Strangely enough when I shorted the pins the engine light had a consistant (no errors) blink, but the idle stopped hunting and settled down at 1.2 ~ 1.4k rpms. When the pins were no longer triggering the diagnostic code reading it began to bounce again.

She rides fine and this is the only engine problem that appears to exist. I really cannot figure why running the computer diagnostics would suddenly 'fix' everything.

If anyone has any ideas as to what could be causing this, all feedback is appreciated.

Thanks much,
GK

Sounds like an ignition problem. How old are your plug wires? and other ignition components(cap, rotor, plugs and gap)? have you checked your timing? A clogged fuel filter could slow down fuel flow too.

i would take a look at your thermostat it may be stuck open or closed. this has nothing to do with plug wires or plugs... this is usually common when you are low on coolant, have an air bubble, or you are not cirrculating enough coolant. since this vehicle was produced before 96 obd2 is non existant in this car and obd1 is not reliable.... you are looking for codes that the computer can not recognize. i believe this problem lies soley in your coolant system... i hope i have helped or helped give you information. also this is a common symptom in pre 96 toyotas concerning the idle and coolant system.
