Hey guys, I've got a 91 MR2T and I'm gonna be trying to go through the annual hope I'll pass emissions inspection again. I know I need to get a cat on my car to pass "legally". Right now the car has a Berk Tech DP and HKS Hi power exhaust. I've been looking at the Random Tech 7000 series high flow cats. I've heard good things about the company through Evo owners. Now I believe the HKS exhaust is 2.5" , now would it make more sense to get a converter with the 2.5" in and out pipe, or a 3" in and out? I just basically want to keep the flow as smooth as possible. I should also mention, I'm probably gonna remove the muffler from the HKS exhaust and have the cat mounted in place. The exhaust is too quiet imo, but then again it may get too loud, guess I'll find out. So just wondering what everyones opinion would be going for this setup. I believe I should pass emissions no problem. Even without a cat I pass every test, except HC at idle, which makes sense. Thanks guys
Hey MR2bad, the cat is gonna be located further along the exhaust system, basically where most mufflers are on our exhaust systems. The DP flange is about 5" like you say, but I'm gonna have the cat mounted with the exhaust piping, which is about 2.5". I have a factory primary cat, but I don't like dealing with taking my DP off and on, plus I want a high flow. I've heard many MR2s passing with the smaller 2nd converter Jesse, so with the primary in place and in good condition, you should pass with no problems.
can you pass with just the main cat and not the second (small) one? i actually need to get my car smoged so let me know how it goes.
You won't pass visual in Cali if you are missing the secondary cat. If your car is in good condition you should pass everything else though. Visual is usually pretty easy to slide on at most places... but not technically "legal".
Well, I just logged onto MR2OC, I cant access it from my pc in my office here where I am deployed. After reading a few threads it seems alot of users have had Random tech cats burn out on them and recommend the magnaflow/carsound high flow cats. Anyone have any personal experience or opinions on these cats. Some people say they outflow the Random tech. Sounds like a good deal, seeing that the Random tech costs about $250 and a magnaflow is about $100 or less. Any info will help, thanks.
^ Thanks MR2Bad, I think Magnaflow will be the way I go. Do you think it'll be too loud with just the High flow cat and the resonator from the HKS exhaust? I wanna be louder, but not illegal loud.

yeah, I think that would be pretty loud. It would prolly be OK where I live, but maybe illegal on the east coast.

i had a random tech cat on another car of mine. good but the engine was NA. still seemed like a lot of junk was then coming out of the exhaust. it flowed so well i took it off b/c i was getting headaches from driving the car with a full exhaust. i still dont think it was worth the money even though it was bolt-on in my application.
Alright, thanks for the input so far guys. Now I'm just wondering, the Magnaflow cat has a Ceramic material honeycomb. From what I've heard if you are running too rich it will burn up a ceramic converter quickly. Now I'm running stock fuel and Ecu, should this really pose a problem? Also wondering, if my exhaust piping is 2.5" should I just get the 2.5" in/out cat or the larger 3" in/out cat to have welded on? Just want to prevent any loss of flow.
