you don't have to pull the oil pan to find tdc. there are marks, and if you don't think that's good enough, use a small wooden dowel and pulla spark plug...watch the rise and fall of the stick as you turn the crank.

why do you suspect a valve?

The 4AGZ is a non-interference engine.

the compression is low enough that there is no way the valve and piston can contact. the valve doesn't go down that far, and the piston doesn't go up that far. you did not bend a valve from a blown timing belt.

^^^ "compression" has nothing to do with it...... the smallport with 10.3:1, the ST with 10.5:1 and the BT with 11.0:1 are all still non-interference......

non-interference simply means that with the valve fully open and the piston at TDC the two don't hit

however.... a 16V head shaved .15 or more could make it an interference motor.....

***edit*** however... I guess you could look at this another way..... a spit shim could cause a bent valve, causing the timing belt to break...... either way, make sure everything turns over nicely before you attempt to put it all back together
