Im looking at buying an NA MK2 MR2 shell, and then swapping in a 3sgte, but im concerned with the value.
I could get a really clean shell for around $2k, and then buy a rear clip and swap everything over for little shy of $3k. Now I absolutly love the styling of the MR2, and the fact that its Mid engine, and handles like its on rails.
But knowing me in a year or so ill probably want something new no matter how awesome the Mister 2 is.
$5k for an early 90's car is alot of money, and im concerned that I wont be able to get back nearly as much as ive invested into the car. What do you guys think? What do relatively clean 3sgte swapped NA mk2's usually go for?
thanks alot!
And hopefully ill be joining your passion for these lovely little machines soon!
Value will depend on the year of the body and drivetrain. I'd say any good shaped turbo swap usually runs for $5-6K. Personally, I'd say if you want a turbo, find a good turbo model to buy. They really arent much more, and it'll save you some headache I'm sure. The turbo models have better brakes, suspension, and you'll save the hassle of swapping these parts over as well. If you got the time and the know how, go for the swap, but I'm personally an instant gratification person. As for getting your money back when selling, any car is a bad investment. Any kind of mods or upgrades are pretty much losses. Also, don't go by Kelly Blue Book on these cars, their value is very under rated. Good luck in whatever your choice, these cars are definetely fun.

It costs $5-6k to swap to the turbo motor??
The only turbo MR2's ive seen are selling for upwards of $10k, I dont have that kind of money. Other wise I would love to buy a turbo model, but Im fairly mechanically inclined, and that last few cars ive bought that were not running I usually sold them for a little profit running.
Im just trying to figure out if its worth swapping in a turbo motor into a clean shell, with out loosing thousands of dollars in value. If I invest $5000 into it, and I can selling for $5000, then that would be fine by me.
Basically do you guys think that a turbo motor would increase that value of an NA MR2 over an NA engine enough to offset the price of the turbo motor?
No, you should be able to find an NA MR2 that has had the swap done for about $6k. You should be able to find a nice 91 turbo for about $7-8K, so its really usually not much more. Well, obviously if you buy a $2,000 shell and put $3,000 into it with a motor swap and everything is running right, I wouldn't see a problem selling it for $5-6k. Just dont be one of those guys, and try to ask for $10k, cause you wont get it. GL

haha, no im not trying to make money on this one. I just dont want to lose money, ya know?
You should look on craigslist.com, I got a 91 MR2 Turbo w/24,000 original miles documented for $2500.00 from a doctor that never drove the car 1 month ago!! 2 weeks later I saw one that had at least $5k in top dollar upgrades sell for $4k and it was show qaulity, I was so pissed it sold before I could get there. There are a lot of people that had these as weekend cars that have out grown them and dont realize what they are worth, there is an amazing full custom shell for sale in Long Beach right now on craigslist.Good luck, and its easier to fix or rebuild a turbo than convert a N/A....In the end your better off to just get a turbo, if you get a 91 watch out for the snap oversteer, first week I had mine I drove it hard like my VTec's and spone it a couple times....
You must have seen my 10 second Civic Si at East Bay I presume.... Or was it my Dinan Powered M3??? The one I bring down on the Fully enclosed trailer that says "Under pressure Fabrication and Distribution" .....maybe???? Or is it your MR2 cant generate enough power to spin the wheels???
