2nd Generation Suspension mystery sway???

Newest mystery with my MR2 is Suspension sway. Its hard to explain but if I'm going down the road it feels like the car is swaying side to side. Its not always, just now end then.It does not happen in and out of boost, its all most like when your tires find a groove in the road and it pulls you into it. The whole car gives a little sway side to side and then it goes away???Any ideas????Thanks....P.S. car is aligned and within specs almost every 2 weeks as I take it to the track. It does not do it when I have negative camber, only when the car is neutral....Thanks again.

We have roads here that give that feeling. I guess they get that way from all the 18 wheeler traffic here. But still, you might wanna do a visual inspection of ball joints, tie rods and ends, and all the various bushings. ya never know. Are cars are old and getting older all the time,.

I have checked everything but the bearings, but I tested them for play and did not feel any, maybe its just the roads, it just tracks really funny sometimes and I have never felt anything like it before.I have staggered size rims and tires on my M3,and it does not track like my MR2, but maybe its wheel base, weight, or mid engine related with staggered rim size???Thanks

I had a bad left rear wheel bearing and all it did was make a slight grinding noise. I couldn't feel anything else....

is the front swaying or is it dog legging from the back...?

sway/drifting/tracking are pretty general symptoms of suspension wear... basically almost every component can cause it.

You know when you gun a high HP car and it kind of lifts and then settles when you let off and the ass of the cars squirms, it kind of feels like that, it makes my head go left then right just enough to notice!! I would not say it comes from the front, its more like when your going down the freeway and your tires pull you into the track the 18 wheelers leave in heavily traveled roads as MR2BAD described, maybe it just tracks funny, but I have never felt it before I changed the springs, and it also does not happen when I set the camber negative, and it happens when I drive on almost any type of surface, but it is not constant, and its enough to grab your attention and make me put both hands on the wheel.Im hesitant to let my wife drive it until I figure it out (lucky for me she can handle high performance cars, as she drives our M3) but I think it might scare her??Mystery???!!!

If all suspension parts are "tight", then I suspect it's your alignment... rear toe.
Happened to me; same symptoms.

I would recommend you get a 4 wheel alignment done to spec. It's money well spent.
*get before & after results/printout. You'll be able to see your problem.
Make sure they check your air pressures, and confirm all suspension parts are 100%.
And if you can... observe them.
btw, I trust you've checked all your tires/psi.

I had a 4 wheel alignment done last weekend and I can hang out and watch, I get them for free so its no big deal, anyone in the OC area of SOCAL, go see Bryan or Mark at Big O Tires in Lake Forest Ca, they are Tuner friendly and do great work for cheap, anyways I will take it back this weekend and tweak it out some more. Air pressure checked every weekend, I know it has to be in the camber or toe, when I set it up for track and give it negative camber it does not do it, its only when I set it back to a neutral setting that it happens...Thanks a ton....

I suspect you have a blown strut.
I'd guess passenger rear.

Check your rear control arm bolts (L & R.) Torque the bolts to 76' lbs. These are the bolts that fastens the rear control arms to the rear cross member. Also check the rear tie rods fastened to the rear cross member. If the bolts just spin and doesn't tighten, then the internal nut that the bolt threads into has come off its weld inside the crossmember. Believe it or not, I've seen this on quite a few mr2's w/ the same complaint you mentioned. Usually happens when someone guns the bolt down w/ an air tool.

What kind of struts did you buy?

Have you double-checked the bolts on the top side?
Back in '96 or '97 I had a local "Tire America" install new springs and struts.
On the way home the car felt uncomfortably floaty. It was scary to drive.
When I opened the front hood, they only had the top nuts on the struts
on enough to hold the struts in place. There was actually a good 1/4"+ gap between the nut and the body

2nd Generation

I have KYB AGX 4 way adjustable shocks, They are 2months old and I just had the rears replaced thinking they were defective, but it still has the same problem, it starts in the rear and transfers to the front, I have had 5, 4 wheel alignments done, and had the whole rear end inspected, the car is almost not driveable. The rear shifts from left to right, or side to side, The problem started after I had the KYB's installled. I have tried both my Tein's and the Eibachs I have on there now,and the problem is the same, the only difference is the car was raised 1 inch in height.Could it be a sway bar problem???I am at a loss, and I dont want to install by boost controller and downpipe until I get it figured out as it will add power and just amplify the problem.Any help will be greatly appreciated....Thanks
