CT27 and Timing belt

When using the CT27 turbo, is the OEM Timing Belt OK? Or will it require something more Heavy Duty?

OEM will be fine. If you're gonna go with the CT27, nothing aftermarket is needed, at least not for reliability purposes. Bolt on turbo and go

Yep. Check out their website. Amazing! Especially for a exact fit bolt on with no fuel upgrade.

Thats what I thought. ATS does recommend 170 degree thermostat and their FPR.And I think I would go with an upgraded IC since there will be more boost. (and a DP for the Max HP it can produce)

I'd personally recommend a upgraded IC to everyone whether your car is stock or not. The factory IC heat soaks so bad, after I upgraded it was a world of difference. Are you gonna be getting a tuned rom from ATS as well MR2BAD? If thats the case, I'd say get your fuel system, IC, and all exhaust upgrades as well so you can have them accounted for in the tune. Of course thats not really logical if you're on a budget like I am... ha, but GL with getting your CT27

i have the oem timing belt and the ct27. you'll be fine. if you are on stock fuel, i would take it to the dyno before you really start upping the boost past 15psi to make sure you dont run lean. i am plenty rich on stock balanced 440s/walbro 255/ats fuel rail at 17psi.

i do also have a greddy ic but i havent run into heat soak issues at the track yet. the only time i did was when i was on stock turbo/ic on a saturday afternoon after 6 or so runs with little cool down time.

i am also honestly not *that* impressed with it. it pulls nice and fast and its a great everyday upgrade but just dont expect anything like the rush from a td06 or t3/t4. it did drop my 1/4 mile time down .8 sec

also be careful about ATS hp ratings. lots of times it is flywheel hp and not rwhp.

So what kind of times are you guys putting down with basic bolt ons, and the ct27? Stock fuel. Im wondering what I would do. I have a jdm 2nd gen, walboro 255 fuel pump, 3" exhaust, intake filter, gutted Cat convertor, and a big sized trunk mounted intercooler. All on a N/A chasis. What kind of times can i expect from a ct27 at about 15-16psi? Im trying to come as close as i can to my buddy. He has less mods then me, and a gen III motor, ct20b and ran a 12.3 at 14-15psi. He has the stock intercooler.

I really just want a good, dependable daily driver that can do upper 12's. I'd be very happy with that. I guess about 300hp would get me there...give or take a few ponies..
OPINIONS on my goal....??? please feel free

generally 13.4-13.6 but i recently discovered my exhaust cam was off by two teeth which is why i have much more torque than hp. i also still havent bought a set of good grippy tires. otherwise our mods are similar. i would expect something like a 12.8-13.2 since my mph is mid 106 iirc.

your buddy is running low 12's on a stock gen3?

if you read ats website they rate it at 350 at the flywheel at 17psi on race gas. i checked the mr2 records website (thanks j&h) and there was only one ct27 listed at 300 or above.

for a 300hp daily driver in my opinion you will need a t3/t4 or td05/06.

Yes he ran a 12.3 with gen 3 with these exact mods....

3" exhaust
Ebay downpipe
Ebay exhaust manifold
manual boost controller 14-15psi
HKS intake

He had crappy tires as well. I get rides all the time and it pulls nicely. He thinks he can lower his time too as his launch wasnt the best.

When i smack the gas, i see alot of black smoke now comming from the exhaust. I know its because i run rich, but it seems like overkill. How would i lean that up a bit to get some more power? Or should I just leave it? I am only getting 20mpg as i got 250 miles to a full tank this week. 1/2 of it was highway driving. It was funny because i didnt want a full tank but the guy pumping my gas pumped it full. I was like "lol I just wanted $10, but thats cool" haha. So figured i would check my mileage while i was at it. Glad i did!! I do however think my timing may be off.

you def shld check your timing. i used to blow black smoke under boost and got around that kind of mileage. figured it was just the jdm ecu running rich. turns out the exhaust cam was off by two teeth.

if you verify your timing is correct you could just lean a little bit with a safc. i just wouldnt go crazy b/c you can easily damage your engine fast with one. def dont road tune the safc. take it to a dyno.

after everything got sorted out and tuned i went from 20mpg to around 28mpg in mixed driving.

My car also pops alot at idle. I got a new exhaust system put on and its already caked with black soot.

I also had a TPS installed but never got it calibrated. I didnt know how to do that.

I do remember the guy that did my swap said that he had to play with the distributor a little. Dont know what he ment by that, but im guessing he was screwing with the timing without a proper timing light.

Think I can also do low 12's when my car is tuned?
