Hi again,
I've been making inquiries regarding insurance for an MR2 and came up with something of a surprise. I'd been led to believe that the turbo version of the car would cost considerably more to insure, yet when my wife made inquiries with Allstate this morning they told her the cost would be the same for either car, all other things (year, mileage, etc) being equal. Costs would be about $440 per annum for liability only, and aprox. about another $100 for comp. and collision for a car valued at about 6 grand.
Though age and driving record obviously play a part in all this, I'd be interested to read what other people's experiences are in regard to this, particularly with regard to the fact that insurance seems to be the same fo either version of the car.
I've heard from many sources that the turbo model is about 25% higher insurance wise, but I checked with my insurance company also (even though i plan on getting the N/A model anyway) and they said it wouldnt' change from my sol ($470/ 6 months liability). That would be to have the car under my name, clean record, and I'm 19.

I had a '92 MR2 N/A which I bought new in '92. At the time. the insurance was lower for the N/A model. About $20.00/month for full coverage and $100.00 deductable for collision and comprehensive. Of course, that was a lonf tome ago. But it does demonstrate the higher rate for the turbo.
At the moment, i pay $134.00/mo for full coverage on my '91 MR2 Turbo and my '95 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 together. with $100.00 deductable on collision and comprehensive. I do have 1 ticket I got in feb of 2006-Prohibited driving( burning rubber in front of a cop I didn't see sitting at sonic..eewww)
Tsk tsk tsk-burning rubber in front of a cop - and you the vice president and all. Shame! Just kidding of course.
I'm probably tempting fate here, but I've managed to get to my present age of 48 without any charges to my name, hence the lower rate. I've had a couple of escapes though, two tickets which I contested in court and won. I'm a firm believer in fighting tickets if you don't believe you're in the wrong, particularly because of the legal and financial implications involved. Cops are human (I should know, two of my in-laws are in the force) and a case of poor judgment or just catching them on a bad day can slug you with thousands of dollars in extra insurance payments.
Anyway, as I said before, the news about the insurance rates just went against practically everything I've read here and on other forums. I'm sure not going to complain - one seller I've contacted happened to mention that he pays $2,500 a year for insurance, due to the fact he's 20 and received a ticket for passing a school bus that had stopped. That's an outrageous amount of money - I think I'd go back to riding a bicycle!
By the way, I took a couple of MR2's out for a test drive today, my first time in the car. What a honey of a vehicle to slip into! If I was a cat I'd have been purring! And for a tall guy who's always been used to scrunching up in an X 1/9, the extra legroom in this particular two-seater was certainly appreciated!

Oh, believe me, I felt pretty darn stupid! and on top of that, my Dad was a cop...
So how tall are you? There's another TN member-Ishcoleobo-who is over 6' and drives an MR2. I believe he said he sits comfortably in his.
and yeah, the Fiat X19 was(is) pretty small......Beretone?
oh, and it's good to see another old fogey on the forum..
Let me guess - the cop who ticketed you was your father?????
And calling me an old fogey? AN OLD FOGEY???? Them's fighting words - just wait until I get out my wheelchair, you young so and so!!
As for my height, I'm no giant, but at 6'1" you really do have to squeeze tightly into an X 1/9 - some guys who autocross them actually have their helmets protruding well out of the open top - really makes it look like they're driving glorified go-karts!
Lastly, you could probably start a thread on 'Most embarrassing moments in front of a cop'. Mine was a few years ago, when I was making my way back across the US from a business trip out west. Driving along late in the night, I came across some traffic that was trying to make sense of a whole pile of roadwork going on, with lights blazing everywhere and doing a good job of confusing one and all. I was stuck behind a truck throughout most of it, exasperatedly trying to get past, when all of a sudden he veered across to the right and left the left lane wide open for me. Given the speed with which he performed the maneuver, and the fact I hadn't been able to see past him of course, I was taken completely by surprise as I realized belatedly that the SOB had left it until the very last second to veer across from a lane that had been closed off via the judicious use of cones - I'm sure everyone knows the drill. Having already moved adjacent to the truck I couldn't veer across to my right, so I had no choice but to slam on the brakes and continue on through the cones, sending them clattering in all directions - all in front of a cop car that was parked to my right as I came to a screeching halt. Thankfully the guy took pity on me and made no move at all as I slowly backed up and drove off - he was probably dying of laughter at my performance. I probably could have talked my way out of it, given the way the truck sucked me into the maneuver, but still, you never know! One of those occasions when I could probably count myself lucky for not picking up a ticket!
Eh, I'm 2 yrs older than you , But not the oldest here. I think I'm in 3rd place...but it's nice to have someone else here who can relate to earlier times.
Yup, you're a lucky guy... I can see how that could easily happen...too funny
BTW, my name is Russ and we are going to have to have a wheelchair race and see who's who ..!
Okay, my mistake again. First I call you a Brit, now I'm applying ageism against you! Guess I put the burning rubber incident and the comment about my age together and came up with the wrong idea! The problem when your only form of communicatiing with someone is a keyboard.
Okay, so now do you want to move onto denture comparisons, or would you like to discuss how to trick out wheelchairs and maximize accleration on them by shaving some weight from the outer rims?
Its funny how different people come across online versus in person. I think I am going to switch to progressive when/if I get an MR2. I've heard good things from 5 people I know with that company, and nothing bad yet... anyone here use progressive?

Me thinks my wife and I will have to look at that. We started with Geico, who seem to focus more attention on their ridiculous little reptile than they do on their customer base, then switched to Allstate, who treated us like dirt a few years ago in the midst of the hurricanes that blew through Orlando that year.
I had Allstate right before I switched to StateFarm. I left Allstate for the reason you just gave...At your age and with your driving record, you should get a very good rate.
My 2001 MR2 Spyder, '91 MR2 Turbo and '95 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 fully insured with a $100.00 deductable on all, and of course the multivehicle discount comes to $225.00/mo.
I hit a deer with the Turbo last spring. I didn't have to "shop around" for 3 quoates and all that. Just took it to a ""Service 1" body shop and everything was taken care of. They even gave me money for a rental I didn't use.(since I still had the truck and Spyder to drive. ) I love Statefarm
I just fell out of my chair , Russ - someone who actually loves their insurance company? Are you a paid representative of Statefarm?
Seriously, I have heard some decent things about Statefarm, and perhaps my wife and I should look into switching over our cars. Don't know whether they'd take on the house though - few insurers want to touch Florida after what happened with Andrew, and again in 2003.

well, maybe love is a strong word. But I have no complaints whatsoever..actually, if insurance wasn't neccessary, i wouldn't be forking out the money for it.
But i did shop around and they had the best $$$.
If I have a problem, I can just call my agent or one of his staff and many times they take care of me over the phone. Of course, these are country people too. Very laid back and easy going..which I do Love..Arkansas is very rural...
