I just picked a new (For me, obviously) 2002 MR2 Spyder. Love it to death. Anyway, I was looking through Google about any know issues or problems I might encounter, and couldnt find any, but wanted to check here as well, just to be sure. There is one issue that concerns me, sometimes when I shift from 4th to 5th, it feels like the tranny is grinding just a little. It only does it going from 4th to 5th, and only sometimes. Could it be a problem, or am I just a little more jumpy off the clutch then I am thinking?
Thanks in advance! I'm off to clean my embaressingly dirty MR2 now, since it apparently rains dirt here in North California.
I've had no problems engine wise with my 2001 Spyder. Water gets in somewhere when it's parked and raining...
As far as your shift problem, what rpm are you shifting at? The VVTi loves high rpm's...
Honestly, I'm not entirely sure. Next time it happens, I will take a note of the RPMs. I usually cruise around base at about 2k to 2.5 or below for economy. The speed limits around here range from 25-50 on base, and of course, off base is miles of (Cop free) hills and straight-aways, so quite a bit more there, naturally.
Get it up to 4200rpm or higher before you shift into 5th gear. peak HP is at that point...
I rev mine to 5K 3,4,5 gear...but I do have a few mods
The engine can take it easily. When they R & D'ed the engine, they ran it for 72 hours at full throttle with no problems.
many times that is true where RPM's are concerned. But too low rpm's can hinder efficiency. The VVTi is a great little engine. Though i do believe this gen MR2 is underpowered. Especially for it's looks..But power to wieght ratio is decent.
