Well, although I was correct about blowing the headgasket.(#2 cylinder), this is what I found when cleaning up the deck, piston tops.
Pitting on the left (intake) side of the piston. And what looks like a crack !
I am going to have to replace that piston and rings.. Darn ! and i was already to reassemble the engine...this is why you need to keep everything in check when pushing your engine hard. I can hear JekylandHyde's frequent cautions about detonation running thru my head...
Look on the bright side. They make nice paper weights or ashtrays.
Might want to look into pricing out a brand new short block fr Toyota. You may decide it might be worth it juxtaposed to just replacing a single piston.
hhmm? I have a friend in the parts dept. at a Toyota dealer here and he's letting me have a new OEM piston, rings and wrist pin for $56.00. But I am going to re ring all 4 pistons.
man that sucks. one of my fiends mixes 3 gallons ethanol with 7 gallons gas in his regal gs, so he gets higher octane. anyone tried that in an MR2 turbo? we can't get higher than 91 up here, I think he calculated it out to be around 97 octane with 3 gallons ethanol and 7 gallons of 89 octane.

people use ethanol and alcohol injection for higher hp cars, but you don't really need to with mr2's as long as your using the best available octane rating.

It takes more ethanol to make the same amount of power as gasoline.
that depends. if you are detonating then you might not be making any power soon. lower octane is easier to burn than higher octane, but higher octane is less likely to allow detonation.

Well, I pulled the piston today. It was not cracked. I don't know what that funny line is. maybe a combination of oil and coolant that burned leaving that mark. But the pitting was enough to warrant a new piston. I took it to the shop to have the wrist pin pressed into the new piston onto the rod. I will pull the other 3 this weekend , cut what little ridge there is, hone it and ring it.
well that is a relief that it wast cracked. that could have led to some nasty things. good luck this weekend taking out the other pistions and ringing it. Yeah i would say that pitting would be enough to get me to buy a new piston, is still would think that you should replace all four. you got it open you might as well do it now to get rid of any doubt about the others. just my thought. get some pics of the fun project!!
Yeah that is pretty lucky actually. I not to long ago had that same thing happen to mine only when it went it decided to take 3 of the four not just one. So i decided that JE pistions and Crower rods were in need and an apexi metal gasket. Well thanks to the car gods you got lucky
