chewed up timing belt problem????

my timing belt is rubbing against something on my motor cause the side closest to the cam gears is all shreaded up. im in the process of taking of the front covers so i can check the tentioner pulley, WP pulley, and OP pulley.

has anyone ever had this problem before? can anyone gimme so pointers? i motor was just rebuilt and everything is new except the tentioner pulley and the oil pump.

... i also had to have the head machined cause the previous owner blew the motor and warped the head so bad the machinest said he had to fix the cam bores. could that be the problem? if so, im i totally screwed?

oh sorry, yes its a 3sgte and the technical term i made up called "cam bores" is the part of the head were the cams rest. actually, the machinist that did the head work said that the head was warped so bad that the "cam bores" needed to be realigned. so i assume his talkin about the immaginary line that runs through the center of a cam would not be straight so it needs to be machined so it is straight. basically, the head made a nice fat U when i got the car.

Ooohh! that doesn't sound good. Where the cams rest is in brackets where they spin on solid cam bearings. I didn't know that that type of warping could be fixed.
The only ways I can think of your timing belt could get "chewed up "is if the belt is loose due to lack of enough tension by the tensioner..Or something may have gotten in the front timing cover. Also, check all gears in front timing cover for burrs, missing teeth.
Either way, you'll need a new belt (about $38.00 OEM). Install it according to specs and check the tension.

is that the only machining he did was the align boring/honing...?

when you align hone the head you should do the block as well... if the cams are out out alignment it is very possible that it forced the same situation on the block.

also did he machine the deck...?

if he machined the deck you need to use a thicker head gasket if a new tensioner can not take up the slack. or the belt will slop.

well i got everything ripped apart and the only thing that i have noticed out of place is the 2nd idler pulley ( bottem one closest to the crank gear) was loose... like wobbely and i unscrewed the bolt with my fingers. im not sure if that would cause the problem. what do u guys think? do i need to keep searching?????

the belt felt pretty stout, like there was not hardly any flex in it when the tentioner is set.

Compressed air would be better... The gears rust easily...

last night i finished checking everything on the timing circuit and the only thing that i could find was that loose pulley and oil leakin from the ex. cam cap. so i the leak sealed up and the pulley tight and the rest of it all cleaned up. i got the timing set except for the teeth on the gear look like they either set about half before or after the ceter mark on the timing plate??? so i set them at the half advance. well, i fired up the car and the belt walks over still. except there isnt any sign of the belt rubing on anything. i took her out and drove for a good 15 minutes and when i came back i checked the belt there were not any belt shavings. its still early though. so i'll keep my eye on it.... but the car feels so strong now. before i took the belt off, i notice the timing marks on the cams were set at the half retarded mark and when the int. cam got skipped 1 tooth, it was 1.5 teeth retarded which equaled zero throttle response.

Gen1 Check the timing belt guide

I don't know about the 3GTSE engine, but on my 3AGE there is a timing belt guide behind the crank pulley.

If I had installed mine the wrong way while doing my timing belt change this week, it would have rubbed against the belt and chewed it up.

I was in no hurry and caught this before installing the crank pulley.

The washer that goes behind the idler pulley. Every walking timing belt I have ever seen, this has been the case. The timing belt walks toward the back shielding. VERY easy to miss/forget and not thoroughly covered in the BGB.

i have a 4agze LB that (was running, actually) had a loose timing belt tensioner.... the belt was rubbing against a bolt head or something else and had physically worn the belt down quite a bit.... probably what happened.... could have caught just a slight edge that would normally be easily out of the way
