Oil Pan Gasket

Why in the hell does Toyota use a sealant for the 3sgte oil pan instead of a gasket?
Has anyone here made their own gasket in it's place? Seems like it would be alot easier. Especially during removal.(Rant)

Most likely the sealant has less leaks, easier to install/apply at factory, cheaper, might torque up better by having metal-to-metal contact.

Use Toyota FIPG sealer (some suggest the black stuff) or something similar. Pry off the pan carefully to not bend the flange. Once off, if required straighten the flange. Rockauto lists a pan gasket for this engine.

It's got the black sealant on it. I bitch to get off. I ended up buying a thin bladed paint scraper to get in between the block and the pan without warping the pan edges. what a bitch.! that shit is stout...
What do you know of this gasket you speak of? Cork ?

the cork.... you kno... if its not torque properly it can get crushed so easily or not torqued enough and not created the right seal.

its what i have. i replaced my gasket w/ the cork type and i tapped every hole clean. pressure washed the pan and everything nice and clean. set the gasket and torqued in good rotation to specs and let silicone that came w/ the gasket cure for almost 5 hours and it leaked in less than 4 months. that was years ago and it still leaks cause i don't wanna do it again. when it becomes too much of an issue then i'll worry about it again. but i've changed 100's of oil pan/ gaskets and i've never had an issues w/ RTV black except its a pain to get off if your coming behind someone else who used it prior.

Thats a good idea. The valve cover and timing cover are both rubber. I wonder how that would hold up? And if they make sheets that you could make your own gasket from?

Fel Pro makes em for our cars. Part #MB91991 It's a cork gasket, have it on mine. No leaks. Cork gaskets are still widely used, especially on aftermarket A/T oil pan/filter kits. They won't leak if installed correctly.
