yea don't blow it up...

if you really want it to last i wouldn't drive it hard or long for 5,000 miles and change the oil every 1,000.00

a motor doesn't even really set in its wear until almost 20,000 miles.

most people don't have the luxury of patience for it tho

Vary engine RPM and load. Limit engine RPM to say 70% throttle. If driving on the freeway, vary engine RPM (or cars speed). Do not want to operate at the same RPM for hours at a time or idle for extended periods. When driving at higher speeds, let off on the gas from time to time to draw up more oil into the cylinders. Increase load on engine from time to time (run through the gears) to force the rings against the pistons. Don't use synthetic oil until engine is broken in.

Monitor oil consumption, when the rings have set the consumption should drop and stabilize. You should be able to feel the engine RPM loosen up as it breaks in.

If you have not started the engine yet, make sure you prelube it by cranking (plugs out) until you have oil pressure. If using new cams/drive train parts, upon starting rev engine to say 2000 rpm for 20 minutes to force oil around these parts and lub them. Might even apply a high-pressure cam grease to the valve train before starting to add in breaking them in.

Change oil and filter early 500 miles or less to help remove any containments from the rebuild. Some change the oil/filter after the first hour of operation. Oil and filters are cheap insurance.
