failed smog! need advice???

today i failed smog. not horrible but got a gross p on my idle. i passed everything but my h/c's at both idle and 2500rpm. 290 for idle and 170 at 2500rpm. here's the thing, i have the greddy tdo6 kit so i dont have my main cat on and the secondary cat hasn't been lit in about 6 years and i havn't drove it that much. therefore, im thinkin i just need a new good cat to replace my secondary peice of crap and everything will be all good. right?? everything else passed. CO was at .30/ O and CO2 where both about 10.
my gas cap falled the function test so i need to get a new one. but here is my big problem....
the smog shop i took my car to is really leaniant on the visual stuff. he said next time i gotta take my car do one of the strictor places since my car is now a gross poluter. well, other than not having the main cat on, i have an ext wastegate and k/n filter. will either of these be a problem for me for next time when i go to smog???

Cats work as soon a they get hot. There's a secondary cat cuz the primary didn't cut it. A high flow cat should solve your problem. Maybe lean it out some.

Well, they are meant as a replacement for the stock Cat. So I would think so. I don't have personal experience with this product, but MagnaFlow makes excellent stuff--for the money. I would talk to someone at a MagnaFlow place and see.

All gross polluter failures can only be certified at a "Test only Station" or Gold shield station. They are not necessarilly stricter, that always depends on the Technician. But they will be more thorough knowing that the vehicle previously failed. Technically, the td06, missing the primary cat and having an external wg fails the visual test. K&N filter is ok, it's CARB legal and has an EO number.

CO2 and O2 @ 10% is terrrible! Are you sure those numbers are correct? I guess youre lucky enough to live in a basic area in ca. since they only did a TSI test and not an ASM(dyno) test. Can you post the max, ave, and meas. readings from your 2speed idle test, including 02 and co2. I have never done TSI test on an mr2.

Ask the smog tech if he notice an exhaust leak. O2 levels are way high, it's the only reason CO passed.
