Cool Newb Here

hey guys what's up?I have known this website for a while and was a member a while back but i lost the account and decided to join up again.Well anyways i was going to get an MR2 and then i kinda went the opposite by joining the Honda scene but just recently my Fully built N/A integra got stolen and now i'm thinking of getting the MR2.I want to get the N/A and just do a 3SGTE swap. Now i want to go ahead and build the 3S before i throw it in.Cause it will mostly be a track car so i'm thinking of throwing in the Greddy t78 kit.Anybody heard abou the kit is it any good??Imma throw in some 9.0.1 pistons, rods, and sleeve it, throw in some cams, thinking of the 272 HKS along with valves, springs and retainers. Maybe headwork as in port and polish and angle job.For exhaust i'm thinking of the Apexi N1 but 3 inch if i can find it if not what are some good exhaust out there. Now i heard about the wastegates and stuff but what is the difference between the internal and external, which is better since i know the t78 kit comes with an external one....Also i know the turbo guys talk about turbo lag but what can be done to reduce it or what can be done to improve it???I'm sorry if some of these are noobish question but i'm not that familiar with the turbo cars.BTW i would like to shoot for the 11 sec range.

First of all, welcome(back) to TN !
Why not just get the turbo model to start with and save the hassle? The bigger the turbo, the more lag. You just have to get your RPM's up and keep them there.
If you're looking for 11 sec range, you're on the right track..You will also need a bigger intercooler for all that boost.
Hopefully you have lots of $$$ to get there.

welcome home! you came back and you are already on the right track!!

i hear good things about the t78 kit personally if i was going to be doing a track i would get the GT35R turbo but that is like $3500 jsut for the turbo!

i think that you might be a step over on the cams i would look at the 264 HKS cams as well but like you said you are shooting for 11sec and your on the right track i agree with everything else you got going there and like MR2Bad said get an aftermarket intercooler one of the most common things is that people buy a front mount and mount it in the trunk and cut out the bottom so that they get airflow. Greddy makes a killer sidemount as well.

TKO makes a 3" exhaust and have only heard praises about it and it sounds great to they have clips of it on their website.

The difference between the internal and external is that the internal is really just regualted by a flap inside the exhaust housing of the turbo and a pressure regulator on the outside. the external is a much more effcient and better it does the same thing that the internal does but keeps everything open and adjusts pressure to what it needs to be. internals are great for low boost (under12psi) but anything higher and esspecially for the track tunning use the external.

As for the lag i dont knwo how much the T78 kit is going to give you but there are always a couple of things that you can do. some would call this crazy but add a little 30 to 50shot of nitrous so that right off the line the turbo prespools and is already then in its boosted state. other then that you can alsways get a brake lock so that the turbo can build its bosst that way. otherwise there is alot you can do but learn how to drive the car better.

Godd luck with the car and as things progress put up some pics it would be great to see.
Welcome back.

A t78 is a pretty big turbo for the 3sgte, the lag I've seen with it was really huge. It began to really spool at 5500rpms. When it did spool though, what a ride! Fully built motor, stand alone engine management, and it ran mid 11's. That's definitely a top mount turbo/tmic set up. A fully built motor is only reliable as it's fuel management is. Fuel pump and injectors, with proper tuning is utmost importance.

Best regards,
Tsu

it sounds like a nice car. i would take your time gearing up for the swap. enjoy the NA motor especially if it is running well. i rushed into it and would do a number of things differently. lurk on this board and mr2oc to find out what combinations work best for big power.

i have seen over on mr2oc someone selling a t78 for $2500 with 5k miles on it. big power kit but spoolup may be too much for a street car. that and the need for an EMS would scare me away from it.

yeah considering my GSR was runnin high 12's na but i want to move on to bigger and better things.I'm sure i will have more fun with the MR and plus i was also getting tired of the honda scene i mean dont get me wrong i believe my dc was one of the few out there like that, and i know it's same with the other cars like civic and stuff but time to face the facts every single swaps most people have out there has been done and u keep seeing it ova and ova not like a toyota or nissan that are different in other ways.but yeah so now i'm jst sayin up to gte my project started.but would a t67 still be good enough to do 11's/ cause i was looking at the prices and i can get the t67 for 3400 and the t78 for 3600 so i figured y not pitch in 200 more and get the t78.But i dunno i'm still debating on those 2 turbos and as for intercooler imma go with the spearco cause i would do front mount but i dont want to cut my trunk. So anybody have any feedback on the spearco as fas what kind of whp it can hold.I will probably give a call to find out before i get it.Anybody else wouldnt happen to know any other good intercooler that will hold that kind of whp?if so i would appreciate if you guys can post webistes.Sorry for the long response but just trying to clarify things and for injectors im goin with 1000cc but the list keep changing as i find out more and more about it.I'll keep u guys updated.

Ya, front mount intercooler on a MR car is a bit extravagant, not to mention unpractical. All the aftermarket side-mount intercoolers are rated around 420-500 flywheel. Of course at that point, you'll be running low 11's easy though. 1000cc injectors are a bit overkill, if you just want to break into 11's, and stick it there. My set up is a stock motor, ATS TD06 Turbo, 550's + fuel rail, Walbro 255, ATS tuned ECU, 3" inch dual exhaust, and Greddy IC. I can run 12.2 second quarter mile all day long, safely too. Actually, that's a VERY popular set up, and it holds the very low 12's consistently. Keep in mind the top and bottom end of the motor is stock. Although, the 3sgte is maxed out at around 400 flywheel hp. So based on that, build your motor according to the 3sgte's capability and expenses. Keep in mind, breaking into the 11's is where it starts to get expensive as well.

Best regards,
Tsu
