I've owned my 91' NA for about 2 years now. In that time i only added a CAI, It has been without a working engine for almost 7 months and in that time I have weighed out several swap options. I was wondering if anyone has any information about XAT Racing(http://ww.xatracing.com/3sgte.htm). They do a gen2 swap for $4800 and it includes apex'i N1 exhaust all installation and tuning. The gen3 is $6400 and include greddy profec B spec II boost controller and N1 exhaust. I hope they do a good job, I have an appt to bring it 7/23 for the gen3. Any and all response is appreciated.
The body is unbeleivably clean and interior is flawless (about 90k), that combined with the lower insurance payments, stereo system and interior already installed causes me to think it would be more practical just to have someone install the 3sgte. what are the major differences between the two.. gen3 has a slightly bigger turbo and better intake manifold design am i wrong?

I appreciate your passion for your currect car and that does make a swap more attractive.
If you go ahead with the swap, it might behoove you to notify your insurance company rather than enjoy the "discount" that you are not getting legally. The difference between NA and turbo insurance has not been significant from what I've seen. I'm always concerned that someone with a swap car will get into an accident, the carrier realizes it's an engine swap and denies them coverage.
As for Gen2 to Gen3, if you are in the U.S., I would stick with the engine that you can easily get parts for. The advantages of a Gen3 are not significant enough, to me, to justify the added expense and harder to find parts.
Again, this is just my opinion based on what I've witnesses over the last 15 years of playing with MR2s.
We madde 635 rwhp this year on my Gen2 and if I had to start all over again ... it would be a Gen2, but that's just me
I second Hydes opinion really from what i have seen as well is the only thing that makes the Gen3 motor more expensive is merely because it is a Gen3 motor. not only that i bet that they will put the profec b II boost controller on there if you want it as well. Not only that the money that you save getting the Gen2 swap you could turn around and add more goodies to the car that you couldnt have done before.
Hey what shop is doing the swap for you? i live right in Port Charlotte and was wondering who is going to be doing the work i think i might know the shop and would even like to find someone who can get a good tune on my car

I really appreciate the response from the both of you, I think from hearing your side (and those numbers) I'll go with the gen2 and add the profec (quoted for $475).. I'll just use the extra cash to get rims/tires (any suggestions?).. Any other goodies I should look into for the gen2?

no problem man. as for as the rims its is all personal prefrences that is the nice thing about htem there is a million different ones and everyone is different. Personally i screwed up. I got some nice TSW Kayilamis and they look sweet but there are to many spokes for an MR2. In my opinion i would get something that is like a 5 or 6 spoke rim. I think those look great on the car. as for other goodies i would invest in after market gauges possibly and a turbo timer. as well get a short throw shifter that will make a big difference as well just in feel for the car. (even though numbers dont show big time splits) it just feels faster which is nice. With us being in FL with nice warm summers and i know that there in Cape Coral you might be doing alot of stop and go traffic i would look at getting some spal fans for it too. Speed-source.net has a nice little setup that i have been eyeing. other then that i would say if you want to get serious with the motor do you cams retainers springs and valves now while the motor is out of the car it costs less and is easier for them to do but if that isnt for a long time down the road then dont worry about. that is my 2 cents. good luck man

how often are you going to be changing your boost settings? ebc are nice but for that money i would spend $50 on a twosrus mbc and put the rest towards rims/tires and a downpipe. $250 for a mbc and dp is going to net you more power than an ebc for $225 more. hell you can use the savings to pay them to install the dp. though the labor shld be next to nothing as long as they do it before the engine is installed.
just my 2 cents.
oh be sure to do something about a fuel pump. the stock NA pump is going to be maxed out trying to supply the fuel for that engine.
i own a swapped gen2 car if you have any other questions.

I'm a newb to the boosted/import world, i apologize for my mundane questions.
How does a mbc work? where do you control it, how difficult is it to control? I drive in stop n go traffic mon-fri and drive on the highway on weekends(and plan to take it to the track once in a while), i figured i would need to change the boost settings accordingly, the swap comes with a custom 3" dp and new fuel pump so that is no problem. thanks for your time, if you have any other ideas or tips i would greatly appreciate it.
ive narrowed down my choices for rims at tirerack, any suggestions for tires?

the mbc is going to work alot like a screw the more you losen the screw the more pressure it is going to allow into the motor. an ebc is going to differ fron company to company some allw you to have two different settings like i have a turbo Xs dual stage boost controller that i have an in cabin toggle switch so that i have it set on 10psi for around town and then flip the switch and it allows the car instantly to run 17psi for the track i dont even have to get out of the car. but that was like he said $225.
Tires becuase you are going to be driving alot stop and go i would go with the nitto 555's they are a good tire and still have a pretty good hole shot for the track. the bf goodwrench kdw's are great tires but are to soft and are expnsive and put a hurting on your wallet that way. that is my suggestion.

its no prob. we were all there at one time. if i had to go back and redo everything, i could save myself thousands in wasted $$.
like the other poster said it works like a screw. i prefer the bal/spring like in the twosrus mbc to the bleed type like i have in my other car. from personal experience, the ball/spring seems to hold/maintain higher boost better at higher rpms in higher gears. i notice little falloff.
the twosrus comes with instructions. first time took me like 45 min b/c some of the hoses dont like coming off. last time i installed it in about 10 min. an ebc is much more complicated.
i dont find myself changing boost settings that often. really only when i go to the track. i just set it on the way and then reset it on the way home. usually about half turn for each lb of boost. boost is addicting. once you get used to a higher setting the lower one will just feel weak. trust me. those lower setting would be used for about a month while you get accustomed to the engine.
im getting a jdm gen2 motor and ecu.. does this mean it wont cut until 16psi?

you should be fine. i would set your boost controller to 15psi. once in a long while it may trip it but then you just turn the car off and pull the ecu fuse for a couple of seconds.
what are doing about the fuel pump?
oh and that n1 exhaust is going to be loud. my swap came n1-style exhaust and it droned
