Unhappy Odd rattling sound from Engine

The last few days I've noticed an odd 'rattling' sound coming from my MR2 Engine (2001 soft top model, not turbo, as far as I know lol).

When I am driving in 1 or 2nd gear, this rattling is really loud, kinda like a really old car would sound. When I get into 3rd and get some good speed, the engine sound smooths out again. But this rattling is driving me insane, esspecially when coming to stops at traffic lights or anywhere.

has anyone else expericed this or even better, know waht it is?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like an old car? maybe engine knock? First you need to find out what model/engine you have. Turbo or not. Are you using the proper octane fuel would be my next question ...though this could be many things. You description is vague..

Hi, just been checking out the engine and as I was writing hte details down I called my dad out to help (i'm useless with cars, sorry lol)

Well, he found out hte cause fo hte rattling straight away!
The panel on the back where the MR2 Logo sits, several screws had fallen out and the panel was loose, this was causing the rattle. I obviously feel dumb for making sucha big deal, but happy that it wasn't worse!

Hi again, I was wrong... The loose panel was just somehting else, Darn!
The engine I have is a VVT-i 16 Value. I am using Unleaded 95 for petrol.

I also noticed, When I push the clutch in, the rattling stops instantly, but hten like before when I slow down it starts again.

I dont know why you are using that high of an octane petrol on that motor. you dont need anything over 87octane. That could be where your motor is getting the "knock" from. When you push down on the gas does the car hesitate to go or does it feel slower then normal? That motor doesnt burn hot enough to really efficiently use the 95 petrol that you are putting in there. and that unused petrol is causing the knock.

Unfortunately, the only choice of petrol I get here is Unleaded 95 and Unleaded 98. So 87 isn't really an option. However after Re-checkign everyithng, we foudn the oil to be really low, pretty mcuh empty. Which is odd, because it was filled just over 2 month ago (as I was told).

Gonna take it out for a drive in while and see if thats made a difference.

So this is a MR2 Spyder? If so, it DOES require a high octane-91 or above. But still, you're description is vague.Whenever we discuss our cars here, we specify year, model and engine.
You may have a clutch problem. Given your lack of mechanical understanding, i suggest you take it to a tech.

Engine heat has nothing to do with octane requirements. Using a higher octane than neccessary will not hurt your engine, but it is a waste since you don't need the extra octane.
Octane is to "prevent " engine knock(detonation). All high perfomance/high compression engines -turbo charged, supercharged-need a higher octane- 91 or higher. Anything above 10:0-1 will need an additional additive on top of that. Like 104 or 110 octane.

I know that the actual heat of the motor dosnt matter on the octane requiremnt i had said it as my buddies and i understand it and that was my fault. on the other hand there are many many cars that run a stock compression ratio that is 10.0:1 or higher and they run 87 to 93 octane. there are very few cars that i know that are running on that because of the compression ratio is around a 13.0:1 but not a 10. my buddy has a 64 GTO with a 15.0:1 ratio and has to run aircraft fuel or it pings. and he cant just idle down the road for a long period becuase the car gets to hot.

yeah that GTO and awsome dont even begin to define that car. It is one of the sickest cars i have seen he can light them up going down the highway at 80mph without down shifting just punches it and they light up!

these are european ratings. different than the US. the fact that they have 98 octane available shld tell you something is off. i am guessing it is like the japanese RON (?). my jdm ecu is tuned for like 103 RON which works out to around 93 or so USDM. this unleaded 95 is prob similiar to our 87 or 89.

these are all guesses though. please no flames.
