guys pls help me out!
i have a 91 NA with a tranny issue. i've noticed and tested and come to the conclusion that . when the car rolling around 10 mph and up , i cant shift to 2nd gear, ( either downshift or upshift from 1st) i'd grind pretty hard. the faster the car runs , the smoother the grinding noise but still cant get into gear
but from 9mph down. i'm allowed to shift to 2nd.
other gears are fine
wonder if my tranny are gone.?kinda nubby questions , but im new to mk2,
any idea

hmmm if i can have the shop take the tranny off my old engine, or if you want the whole thing, you can use it. It shifted perfectly. not a gear head so i dont know whats involved. just pay for shiping and you can have it, otherwise its just going to scrap. send me a PM if your interested.

sounds like the clutching teeth on 2nd gear are shot... from possible forcing shifts due to a worn syncro.
the syncro slows the free spinning gear that connects to your counter shaft so the slider can move over it when you shift that gear.
the clutching teeth on the gear help align the slider so it can slide easily onto the splined gear.
if the syncro wears you can still shift, you'll just having the momentarily grinding.
if the clutching teeth fail... you have nothing to really align the slider splines onto the gear splines... and the faster you go the harder... or more impossible it will be to shift. cause the syncro can even if its still good can slow the gears but nothing to align them... they will not go w/o a fight.
is your tranny shot....? no... a rebuild.... probably.... is it cheaper to buy a reman.... probably
Just a simple thing to check to make sure it isn't the culprit, is the shifter. I have seen the shifter linkage/nut loosen and keep the shifter from being able to pull the linkage all the way in for the shift. Tightening up the nut totally solved the problem. Since it's simple and free, it is worth checking out.
Just remove the boot and check out all the nut, linkage bushings, and all connectors. See if the linkage can't move far enough because of a restricted throw.
When you solve it, let us know what it was. Good luck.
couldnt you double shift to align the gears? i know it probably be a hastle but that prevent the grinding right? hit the clutch goin out of gear in neutrual release the clutch then hit hte clutch and put it in grear....that should stop the grind correct? iver heard ppl doin that before.
GM's synchomesh is the best, but the cost a pretty penny($$$). . and ohh..if its the syncros, you can double shift and it should work. I did that for 2 years on my car, until i did a jdm swap.
i tried to replace the tranny fluid with redline but the filler botls is rounded. i used 24mm sixpoint sockets. I'm gonna try twisting dat bolt with vise crips. any other ideas.
yup i tried double shift, but same problem. like i said. the car was free rolling, neutral gear
