Well as the title says Im new to Aw11 Mr2s and need some info. My friend and I recently fixed on and got 3 mk1 mr2s for free. The one I got has been sitting since 1996. Antifreeze looks green and fresh, motor oil looks clean. Dont know about gas. Tomorrow if we can get it moved, then Im going to jack it up and drain the old gas out. Anything else I should check before I try to start the car? I need to replace the back glass, is there any info on this? We have one mr2 parts car to get parts from, just wondering how to do it. Also did the basketweave wheels only come optional on the 87s? First thing I have to do is bomb the car with some kind of wasp killer, as wasps have made a nest and I dont know where it is. Cheers.
Oh I also know how to get a key made. The original owner lost the key, so I have no key to start the car with. Do I just use the VIN and go to the dealership?

Wow, thats a long time to sit. regardless of how the oil looks, I think I would change it.

I would also replace all ignition components. Cap, rotor, spark plugs and wires.
Before you actually start it, disconect the coil wire and carnk the engine over several times to get oil circulated thru the block and head. Then reconnect coil wire and start it.

Dealer can do it that way. But they are expensive. I have found that locksmiths are cheaper and can accomplish this the same way.

Good good, didnt know locksmiths could use the Vin. Thats nice to know. Yeah I was going to replace a lot of components, but I want to see if the car is actually going to run before I spend tons of money on it.

I hear ya.. But if it doesn't start you will be wondering what the problem is. With new ignition parts it will be more likely to start and eliminate that as a possibility. I guess you could crank it and see. But I highly recommend getting the oil thru the system before actually letting the engine run. Be carefull not to overheat the starter.
^yeah I will do and as it turns out no key kan be made by anyone except dealer. I even have the damn passenger lock out and no one can make a key. So, I guess I will be busting the steering loose, and breaking the switch, because im not paying an assload for a key for a car i got free. This is going to be a gutted car anyway, so I guess it doesnt matter.
I only had the Valet key for my '91 MR2 Turbo. it would only start the car and open the doors. I couldn't use on the trunk or the locking T-Tops. I went to the dealer, they wanted an arm and 1 of my legs. So I went to a locksmith and he got the Vin # and made me a key. . Now that I think about it, he was also a repo man. That may be the difference . So he may have had some special connections .
Best of luck with your project !
^yeah no one around here will make a key off of a VIN except the dealer, so I guess Ill be busting the switch up today to just get the steering wheel loose. XD
Before you turn the engine over, remove the plugs and spray in some light oil (not WD40) into each cylinder. Leave the plugs out while you crank a bit. With the car sitting as long as yours has, rust has probably formed in the cylinders. If you don't lubricate first, you will score the cylinders. The oil will help to some degree.
Yup going to be cranking her up tomorrow once I drain the gas tank. Finally got the car moved to a place where I can work on it. Oh also I finlly got a key from the dealer so Im all set.
