Gen1 so no power steering...but

I know that the MK1 does not have power steering, and so before really getting up to speed the car is pretty difficult to turn ( I gave an 86).
However when I hopped in my friends 89 (which is almost entirely JDM) it felt like it had power steering.
Why is that? Is there anything I can do to improve handling, steering response, and ease?

I'm not too sure what you are talking about. There should be no difference in steering effort. Your friend might be running higher pressure in his tires which might explain it. Does he have larger/wider tires too? That could also make it different.

Next, you want to improve handling, steering response and ease. What exactly are you wanting to do with the car? AutoX, Track day, or canyon racing? About the only thing you can do about the steering effort is to hit the weights. That and make sure you start moving before you try steering.

second to the wieghts thing. another factor that ease out handling is smaller steering wheel. my 86' got the Momo one , and it does feel lighter turning
