USA Turbo/boost/gasoline/gas mileage questions

What's up TN

I got a couple of questions about gas mileage/ turbo

I'm getting horrible gas mileage on my 91 turbo MR2
I get about 8- 10mpg and that's without spooling the turbo, I'm talking abou driving like an old man and barely touching the gas pedal and I still get horrible gas mileage, any suggestions or comments guys?

I checked the tire pressure and that's about it and also I jsut noticed I don't have an air filter, does that make a difference at all>?

Please respond with your suggestions/advice of how to get better gas mileage, thanks to everyonr in advance!

I suggest doing a tuneup.Change of plugs, wires, dizzy cap, rotor, fuel filter and also usea bottle of injector cleaner and see if that helps.

I would also pick up an air filter. either stock replacement or any cone filter from like autozone. they are only 20 bucks if that. You dont want to get anything in your engine or you will have bigger problems to worry about. If everything listed above does not help you may of already got something in there.

I just checked my intake last night and I noticed there's no air filter in my box, is that bad?

yes, there is nothing keeping stuff other than air from going into your engine. pick up a filter soon as you can. like i said, its not the source of your problems but it can lead to other big problems.

Thanks for that
I had another member tell me that I was getting horrible gas mileage cause the BOV i have is not recirculation and it's spitting the air back into the atmosphere and not the intake, tehrefore i'm running rich, I have the stock BOV and he suggested a HKS (copy and paste)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...176769184&rd=1

I also have my stock BOV, what's the difference between the HKS and the stock one?

The stock one is better. Its a diaphragm type whilst the HKS is fine tuned with a spring. you should recirculate the air back to the intake but that isnt going to drop your mileage down 12 mpg. Do yourself a favor and never listen to that guy again.

yes. also make sure your check engine light isn't on. if it is, pull codes by jumpering E1 and TE1 in the diagnostic box on the right rear side of the engine bay. read codes by counting flashes of the check engine light.

Yes, you need an air filter. Otherwise you may suck a foriegn object into the turbo and then into the engine. At the very least , without a filter, you are sucking in alot of dust and dirt...Bad !!!!
Are you getting black soot out of your exhaust pipes ?

Last year I was getting 12-14mpg. It was killing me too. It turned out that I had an exhaust leak. The o2 sensor gasket was eaten up and the o2 sensor had to be replaced too. After that I started getting decent mileage again. If the o2 sensor is malfunctioning, it will send incorrect signals to ECU.

if its not a o2 problem check your cold start injector...the sensor could be messup and causing the cold start injector to be on all the time making you run rich and eating up all that gas and poor performance...the cold start injector sensor is the on the water neck and is the black plug under the coolant sensor for the ecu (green plug)...if it is a bad cold start injector sensor you can always take the cold start injector off and get a block off plate but it might make it a little harder to start the car...or spend 150, i think it was 150 when i went to get one at toyota, for another sensor from toyota...
