steering conversion issues...

ok heres the deal guys, iv got a 91 SW20 that iv removed the power steering from and replaced with a manual rack from a gen 3 SW20
i used the rack itself, along with the universal and lower section of the steering column all from the gen 3, now for some reason the column isnt long enough to connect the upper section of the column to the universal on the end of the rack. the lower section of the column measures 400mm long and from my measuring up it needs to be approx 50mm longer than that to reach properly

now are there any differences at all in length of any part of the column, upper or lower between gen 1 and gen 3? if so which part is different?
is the upper section of the column any different with manual steering?
and are there any other differences which may affect this?

many many many thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide

you need to replace the shaft that runs from the footwell into the frunk. this link might help you, it's from KO Racing's website: http://www.koracing.net/viewarticle.php?article=5

specifically, i think this picture is what you're encountering: http://www.koracing.net/img/steeringcolumns.jpg

the column on top is the one you need, the one on bottom is the one you have. i just saw that you're in new zealand, but i bought my column from Josh at ChicoRaceWorks (http://www.chicoraceworks.com/) here in the states. he might be able to help you out with international shipping if you're unable to find one in NZ. good luck.

well, iv already replaced that shaft (i refered to this as the lower section of the steering column in my post)
yet still no joy, theres literally 5mm of daylight between the end of that shaft and the end of the universal when everything is assembled.

now im lost as to why this is
and the only possibilities are that for some reason the upper section of the column (inside the car with the steering wheel bolted to it)
isnt long enough for whatever reason whether it be generation related or manual to power steer related i dont know

or the lower section isnt long enough, again possibly generation related maybe?

but that shaft (lower steering column section) the u joint and rack all came from a gen 3 SW20 and are all manual steering parts obviously
my car is a gen 1 SW20 hence why i think it may be because of the different generations if that makes any sense? altho i dont see why it would be any different from year to year
