So im taking my 86 NA and swapping in a 4agze, only problem is I hardly know where to start! I have about five grand for the engine and labor and everything else
1) Where's a good place to buy a full 4agze swap? I looked on ebay, but im not sure if I trust some of these JDM engine places.
2) What is the minimum i have to do to get this thing running? I know ill have to put a bigger exhaust in for the SC, what else do I need?
3) If I have any money left, wheres a good place to start adding power? Also what should I do while the engine is outta the car that'll add power/avoid future problems
Thanks in advance, im super excited to have my mr2 back and faster then ever!
i've done the swap in an 87, turboing a different 87 (current work in progress), and have done numerous stock-stock and stock-modified motorswaps in other mr2's (and tons of mr2 work).
let me know where you are as well.... i can help you find everything you need and have all the required info

There really isn't much to swapping out these two motors. Everything bolts right up to the same places pretty much as the motor you have now. You will only have to splice into the body harness of the car and there are complete diagrams as to how to do this out there on the web.
Anything you ever wanted to know about any gen MR2 is right there at that site. You should register there as well. I've been there for a few years and I've found out a lot of stuff and if you get stuck, make a post asking for help and someone will help you. Also you can find out a lot more on the 20V swaps for the MK1 MR2. Sometimes cheaper than the 4AGZE and with as much power as a stock 4AGZE.
Go look at the site and read around. I'm sure you'll like everything you find there. That site showed me the MK1.5 swap and that is what my car WILL become no matter what the cost or how long it takes.
um... I'm in Bellingham.... which is about 2 hours north of Tacoma..... (well, 2 hours north of my parents house which is NE tacoma.... aka federal way).
There's a company in Bellingham that *might* have one in stock (clip).... but I can get ahold of people who either have the engine or know how to get one..... (I know he has 3 of them in his garage... but they might all be called for)

You don't need a complete clip to do the swap. you just need the engine, harness uncut, ECU. The engine bolts onto the mounts already in the car and the ZE motor will mount up to the C series transmission already in your car and you can use the axles you have now as well.
As I said before the swap is mostly a bolt in swap. You just have to splice in wires to the body harness. I don't mean to offend the above poster but its really not that hard of a swap to do.

i've done the swap.... and 20V's and standard 4ag's into non 4ag cars.... i have experience
all you really need is a LB and a megasquirt..... which if he lives close enough to teach I will reccommend....
I was making a mention of the clip because the shop in Bellingham, WA sells clips..... for about $1,000 and they can be picked up.....
the C series will bolt up.... but with the torque down low you better be keeping a couple spares on hand.... it only takes one launch
using the E series it DOES NOT bolt right up.... you need to modify either the body side or the mounts themselves for it to work (especially in an 86).
the wiring in an 86 is different... and in a different location than in the 87-89's.... wiring in a stock aw16 harness into an 86 is more difficult than just a few wires here and there like it is on the 87+'s
I'm not saying it is a hard swap.... but it does take some knowledge.... otherwise you will find yourself in either over your head over over budget because you had bad information.... (hint)

I was gonna get a new tranny the one in my 86 has developed the fifth gear popout like most c-50s. How about the name of the shop that might have a clip, it would safer to buy the whole clip. Also I dunno about a megasquirt yet i dont have a reliable tuning shop and im not sure how much it would be to set it up. I dont have the space here to do the swap myself im forking out for a shop, maybe if anyone knows of one close to Everett thats done this before, my normal shop guy said he could do it for a decent price. If anyone has a line on a full setup, engine tranny wireharness and ecu, it would be helpfull. Also any specific problems you remember running into would be helpfull, at like eighty dollars and hour its hard to imagine them spending hours figuring out stuff you know?
I am in sarasota fl. and am researching the 4agze swap for my 87' and plan on starting the swap in a couple months and if there is a shop that sells rear clips for $1,000 i NEED THEIR PHONE NUMBER, everywhere i look for the jdm 4agze from an mr2 they want at least that much for it and i can't find a clip
