aw11 clutches/flywheel

Before I go sinking like eight hundred dollars into a new clutch and flywheel for my 4agze, i was wondering, has anyone had any experince with the fidanza lightwieght flywheel off twosrus.com? And how about clutches, whats a good brand? I think ill shoot for stage 3, i want grip but i gotta drive this every day.

THanks

I've had friends who have bad luck with fidanza as a whole. the problem is that the flywheel is aluminum, and the starter ring gear & the clutch surface are steel. The starter ring gear is pressed on and the clutch surface is bolted on.

the different types of metal have different heat expansion rates..... it's common for the starter ring gears to actually pop off. Generally (afaik) fidanza is good about replacing the flywheel in this situation. However, you still need to do the work to get it out.

there is a problem with bolting it all together as well.... an mr2 owner had this happen in his saturn.... the bolts that you use to bolt the PP to the flywheel are steel.... with different expansion rates they can slowly back out and make you lose use of your clutch.

Make sure you have matching flywheel and clutch combination for what transmission you are using. I answered some Q's of yours in another post about transmissions.

Okay thanks alot. All this in stride what would you suggest? Getting a like moly steel flywheel? And who makes a good one of those? Also, i know there is a difference between the 4age and 4agze in the flywheel, how about the actual clutch? I havent found anywhere making a designation between the NA and FI clutches.

it's not that the 4age and 4agze flywheel/clutches are different.... either can bolt onto either engine as they both have the same crank.... it's more of a matter of which flywheel/clutch goes with what transmission.

if you have a C series transmission then you need a flywheel/clutch combo that goes to a C series (200 or 212mm)

if you have an E series transmission then you need the clutch/flywheel combo that goes with the E series (228mm)

each clutch & PP is different depending on what flywheel you have/are using

in my old 87 s/c swapped car I had an E51 with a resurfaced flywheel (stock) and a TRD Japan 3-puck racing clutch and PP.... it was manageable but not fun in stop & go traffic (very heavy clutch)

in my current 87 turbo car I will be using a C52 from an ae92 and a stock clutch/flywheel combo. If they slip then I will go with something else.

I personally think that purchasing an aftermarket flywheel is silly..... there's not a whole lot of need for it.... it needs to be perfectly balanced because 4ag's don't use harmonic balancers..... and the money can be spent elsewhere for greater performance gains. If you want a good stock combination (if using a C series) then get a 200mm flywheel and a good aftermarket clutch to hold the power. Even though the 200's are the heaviest, they are the smallest and have the least outer rotational mass.... i've put 200's into my ae92 and a friends mr2 and we both saw equivalent gains to using a lightened flywheel. 200mm flywheels can be purchased at any parts store for about $40 after core return.
