I hear people complain about how the stock downpipes crack, is this a common thing?
also, the turbo kits I was looking at comes with a one piece downpipe, but I wanted to go with the Berk one as it also has a flex section... do you need certian downpipes for certian turbos or is it a one size fits all kinda deal? (provided its big enough for the airflow, lol)

I've never heard of a stock downpipe (upper elbow and cat) cracking. They are pretty much as solid as stuff gets.
Aftermarket downpipes without a support bracket have a tendency to break. Most downpipes sold these days will come with some sort of support bracket. Normally they are a triangular piece that goes from two of the bolts at the bottom of your downpipe, to the bolt that holds down the turbo oil return line.
Berk makes downpipes for CT26's.... these will only work on CT26's (or any variation of the CT26). They also sell downpipes with their turbo kits... but they will work ONLY with their turbo kits. Same applies for any other turbo or company.
You could always have the downpipe of the kit you buy customized to include a flex section... though I don't think they are entirely necessary.
you dont really need the flex section. Most of the top companies that make the kits (ATS, KORacing, ect.) dont use them. So i wouldnt get to hung up on that

how did ur custom fabricated axles come? i got my motor i need some axles now
well, i gave him a call today, since he was supposed to be on his way to my area, and he is not coming till like thrusday-friday. so i said just ship them out. very very disopointed... if you tell someone your gonna be there then your arnt.. might look elseware for parts in the future.
i coulda had them shipped out when i ordered, but he said he was going to be in my area tuesday. so i said "in person is better, then i know they will be here tuesday, not just whenever fed ex feels like shipping them with all the christmas junk"... he very easily coulda just shipped them out to begin with, instead of saying, hey, i will be in your area on tues. now i dont have a part when i was told i was getting it. and on here whining and complianing lol oh well.

Any idea why Toyota bothered to put in the flex section? I was gonna build my own exhaust and include a flex section. They're pricey. I have a pipe bender and welder.
So if I don't need one I will leave that part out. Your thoughts on this...?
sorry i should have specified. The main reason why most of the companies donr include the flex section in the downpipe is they assume that you will already be upgrading the rest of your system. Which in most cases if you buy an aftermarket system it will replace the cat section with a b-pipe which includes the flex section therefore to have it in the downpipe is pointless. I didnt mean to come across that you dont need a flex anywhere in your exhaust because obviously thats not true.
As you know the flex section is there to prevent cracking in your exhaust because your engine will shift when you apply the throttle. So the flex will let the exhaust move without creating stress on the flanges and the hangers or bends.
so if you replace the cat with a b-pipe, this means the car is illegal for a visual inspection right? however i assume people can still pass emission after all this.. im not too worried as arizona is pretty lax, and i dont plan on driving into cali lol.

If you still have your primary cat you should be fine.

i did a swap, i do not have any pieces of the turbo exhaust system.. any recommendations on an aftermarket cat? or getting a stock on from the stealership?
this car is one hell of a headache >< hahaha

Your in Arizona.... you might be able to pass. I know that Phoenix and Tuscon are the only places that require smog.... but I'm not sure how strict they are. You won't be able to purchase them new from a dealership.... it is illegal to sell cats. Your best bet is to search MR2OC for one that is for sale.
What are you currently running??? Or is your car not running? For a stock setup you will need the "upper turbo elbow" and the "primary cat". Any aftermarket downpipe will replace both of those (except for a few.... blitz is the only one comes to mind).
hmm... i be running whatever was sent, i have the stock downpipe so i guess i have the cat, i can ask the shop when i bring MY NEW AXLES up there to have them put in. the car runs strong. just cant move... yet haha
so how do you people who buy turbo kits and whatnot pass emissions? im not concerned about visuals, and there are more ricers than i care to count who mod their cars and pass. I will eventually get an aftermarket ecu (hydra unit), could i just detune my car or something for the test, then switch back after?
lets see Hydrocarbons in grams/mile we are allowed 1.00
carbon monoxide in grams/mile we are allowed 12.00
and oxides of nitrogen in grams/mile we are allowed 2.50
edit: btw, I met josh from CRW in person, got my axles, cant wait to get back on the road!
