3SGTE = More power (depending on gen 210 - 290), more upgrades, gives the MK1 damn near supercar status with a power to weight of 0.98 avg. A harder swap to do, but worth it in every way. especially for the turbo.
20v = Normally aspirated, 140-160hp, Easy to tune and maintain. not as rewarding as a 3S setup....kinda boring.
Really, i say go with a 3SGTE because both swaps cost about the same, and there are more parts availible for the 3SGTE for cheaper. And with double the origional power of the AW11 it is something to be wrecken with. I dont think the 20v is that impressive and its quite boring.
Awsome! I always thought the 20V was more powerful, but guess not. Im planning on doing a swap in the near future. Would my MK1 Mr2 be considered a MK1.5 with the 3S-GTE?

The 3sgte is a FAR more expensive and more difficult swap.
I've had silvertops come in at $1000 for the entire swap and blacktops around $1300. Even if you have great fabbing skills, a mk1.5 won't come anywhere near this low.
A 3sgte will obviously be much faster. The 20v is 1.6L and NA. It's about the fastest thing you can reasonably put in a mk1.
The only fabbing you have to do on the 3SGTE swap is the mounts.....once you are past that, the difficulties of swapping the motor in is the same as a 20v.
Most 20v motors i find on ebay are around $1400-$1900, Most 2nd Gen 3SGTE's are $1500-$2000.
you can get a 3sgte pretty cheap from either mr2trader or the for sale adds of people parting them out on the mr2 forums easily. Or just try and find a donor mr2 from a junkyard.
$1900 would only be if you're paying the premium for a 6speed. There is a place that sells silvertops for $350 pretty consistantly. It's getting to a point where you'd pay more for a replacement 16v.
I've had 20v swaps come together in as little as 2 days. Usually it's a few weekends. Mk1.5's usually take months.
I guess if you're comfortable rewelding motor mount brackets, the 3sgte is a good swap for you. If not, then another A series or ZZ series motor is probably the best plan.
I guess the 20v is popular because even people who have never removed a motor from a car can do this swap.
would an MK1.5 with turbo go faster than a MK2 with turbo? The MK1.5 wouls still be lighter right???
A Mk1.5 has the same if not more power then a MK2T and has the same gear ratios...so it is faster then a MK2 Turbo. The Mk1 frame is lighter and better handling too.
