Shim Removal

I've read the BGB on valve clearance adjustment and replacing lifter shims. But does anyone have any suggestions as to performing this without the Toyota "Special Service Tool"(SST). There must be another way to depress the lifter, then remove the shim with the camshaft in place.
Toyota wanted $228.00 for the SST. No way I'm paying that for this tool. geez!

Here is a quote from another thread

Quote:
I've used a flathead screwdriver, pick, and magnet. You use the screwdriver to wedge between the camshaft and the shim bucket (not on the shiny part of the camshaft, but on the cast part). Twist the screwdriver to pry down the shim bucket, then use the pick and magnet to remove the shim. Shims are a bitch regardless of whether you have the special tool or not. I actually find the screwdriver easier than the tool.
Ive seen a few people that do it this way. If you dont want to try this then you need to either get the tool, or remove the camshaft

I do a lot of work on Suzuki bikes, and I managed to get this to work on my friends 4cyl camry a while back. Who knows, might work on your mr2.

I'll try that. I really want to avoid removing the intake cam. Just got this critter back together and running. I'm getting tired of working on it. But if have to remove it to get this done-I will. Thanks

Well, the ATV/Bike shop was closed so I used Engineers method. Which worked.
But I would expect the gap between cam and shim to enlarge as it wears. But the gap was .005in.
Which is .001 out of the .006-.010in valve clearance spec. What would cause this?
There is a tapping noise coming from the #1 intake, which is why I checked the valve clearance.

the valve face and valve seat wear which causes there to be less clearance between the shim and the cam.

^So that means I have to replace the valve and not the shim?

nope, just reshim. don't need to replace the valves unless they're burned/cracked or otherwise broken. are you able to get a leakdown test done? that will indicate whether or not your valves are sealing well.

Hey MR2, when you figure out the size shim that you need, you may be able to go to the parts counter at the dealer and just exchange it (assuming it isn't worn or damaged). Every dealer I worked for had buckets of different shims for various engines in the parts dept, and we would just swap them out for customers who were doing their own work.

Yeah..There are 28 sizes..
I already have the 2 suspect shims out and measured.
Old shim thickness + measured gap minus nominal gap = new shim.

Maaannn, I wish I read this before I left the house this morning. But Toyota was closing at 11am for Christmas Eve.And they just happened to have the correct shim size in stock..Imagine that!
They said those shims have been on thier shelf for 10 years...lol
I couldn't believe they wanted $8.00/ea for them..! Thank God I have a friend up there. He sold them to me for $5.50/ea. Though cheaper, still alot for a round flat piece of metal the size of a quarter...geez
