pay attention to this man! he knows what he's talking about. this is an often-overlooked first step to modding your MR2T or any other car for that matter.
the next step i would say involves pen, paper, a calculator (and Pepto Bismol if you're weak-stomached

) because deciding how far you want to go IS the major second step.
if you think that you will want to cross 280 HP, then i would say get the exhaust, an ignition amp of some sort (MSD, Crane, whatever) and ... believe it or not ... i'd suggest you get an aftermarket EMS early in the game. it will help to remove some of the future costs of having to get it later on (after you've tried to tune with the stock ECU and add-ons)
if you don't plan to cross that line then do exactly what MRQturbo said ...
