Engine leaking coolant

Hi there everyone,
I have a '91 mr2 turbo and am leaking coolant from somewhere under the turbo area. I can't see where its coming from because the firewall is in the way. Should I cut out the firewall...just kidding... I have tried looking under the car and cannot locate the leak from there either. I just know it leaks alot and I'm thinking freezplug. Has anyone else had this problem.

Thanks
Benj

Thanks for the quick reply, I tried looking up the problem on the site you mention and could not find anything. But there is a coolant hose between the firewall and the block for sure?

Actually, there are 2 hoses underneath the turbo and between the block and passenger compartment firewall. The hose from hell(HFH) as Engineer pointed out, and another small one that goes to the oil cooler at the base of where the oil filter screws in. If thats the hose(s) that are leaking, you will have to remove the turbo and downpipe to get to it. The actual hoses are only a few inches long. Best to replace both while you're down there.
There is also 2 bypass lines that are made of metal that come from the water pump area and thermostat housing that lead to rubber hoses that cool the turbo. Their connection to the thermostat housing is sealed by an O ring. They don't usually leak there though. Thermostat housing could also be a possiblity for a leak. But I think I would agree with The Engineer and start my search at the hose from hell.

new problem

OK here goes, I found this site called mrtwo.net they give great instruction on changing the HFH. BTW the site gave the exact details of the symptoms I experienced, so you guys are right. Before I posted my problem I started pulling the turbo heat shield attempting to remove the turbo in order to locate my problem. While doing so one of the rusty bolts stripped, and the one near the firewall feels like is going to do the same. I do need to replace the clutch soon so I thought of just pulling the motor and fixing everything.
Yes or No? Also if yes can I remove the motor from the top or does it need to come out from below?

Thanks
Benj

well it all depends on the equipment you have to remove the motor. If you have an engine lift you pull it from the top. But most people dont have that equipment so they just put the car on 4 jack stands and have the rear high enough to drop it though the bottom

Pulling it would be easier to work on everything and I think top is easiest too. Especially if you have a hoist. Then you can avoid removing the rear cross member. I found a couple of bolts that stripped out too. Use antisieze where bolts get really hot and tend to rust when you reassemble.
Oh, Engineer- Love the Sig!

HFH Replacement

Well, I descided to change the HFH this last saturday, took me around 7 hours, WOW for just a hose that costs less than 4$ from the dealer. It was a bear I must say, I changed it without pulling the turbo. If you take out the upper and lower parts of the oil cooler and then lay over a comforter accross the engine. I put my feet carfully toward the drivers side tail lights, you can kinda see what your doing, sometimes I had to stand on the passanger side to reach as well. Anyhow is works fine until I'm ready to do the clutch job.

Thanks to everyone
