Timing

Have '91 MR2 turbo.(3sgte)
When I reassembed the engine, I looked up timing specs-10 degrees BTDC. Got out the timing light and set it. I was looking at the BGB the other day and noticed it says to short
TE1 and E1 in diag. box when setting the timing. I didn't do that. Is that neccessary? What effect does that have? I intend on going back and retimng the engine using that method, but I am curious as to the reason for this and what that does?

Shorting TE1 and E1 will display your engine codes if you have any. I'm not sure what effect this would have on timing.

it sets it into base timing... which is timing at its lowest idle rpm w/o stalling the motor.

its supposed to disable any advances... anything that can effect timing... so you can get the base reading...

Yes, i've done that to check a CEL-#41: Throttle Postion Sensor. Which I checked out and ended up replacing.

When I installed the new timing belt, I guess it had skipped a notch and the timing was off. It would barely idle. After re-aligning the belt correcctly , and setting the timing(10 degrees BTDC)is when the CEL came on with the code 41. Like I stated previously, I replaced the TPS, but still get the same code. I was wondering if not Shorting TE1 and E1 when setting the timing had anything to do with it.
Any ideas?

no, that had nothing to do with it. jumpering e1 and te1 disables the ignition advance, it IS necessary for setting base timing correctly.

^ actually, I felt I needed to since I tore it down to the block, honed all the cylinders, ringed all the pistons and replaced one piston. Rod bearings too. But when I reassembled it and checked the timing(expecting it to be off), it was dead on.
I'm going to retime it using the TE1 And E1 thing and see if it makes any difference.
