Imported MR2 Questions

I want to get a 91-92-93 Toyota MR2 Turbo. I live in Canada, so the car was only available for those 3 years. It seems every other car I look at these days is a Japanese import RHD vehicle.

I am not all that opposed to an import car, I am just somewhat confused about parts. I have some other concerns as well.
What is the deal with every import car having a ridiculously low amount of km's?! Most every one I have seen is in the 90-120k area. Call me a skeptic, but...
Are there any parts concerns? Would the engine in a Japanese car typically be a 2.0L turbo (same as a NAmerican engine)?

If anyone out there has an import MR2, and can give me some feedback, I would be forever in your debt. I know I will pretty much be rebuilding whatever car I buy, so I don't want to overpay some unscrupulous dealer, or screw myself by having a car with an engine that is impossible to get parts for.
Cheers guys...

Most Japanese in Japan do not have to drive very far living on an island and all. It was the same when i lived in Hawaii. You can only go so far.hence the lower miles(KM's).
Did you mean N/A American engine? The N/A is 2.2 liter and the Turbo model is a 2.0 They are very different. The JDM can use some of the USDM parts. You can find JDM either from Japan or some on Ebay.
The JDM and USDM have sublte differnces. (HP, Turbo's,ECU's)
Anyway, Welcome to TN. There are several Canadian MR2 Owners on this forum. Hopefully they will chime in.

Seriously. I wondered about that. There is an import place near my house that has a bunch of old Supras and "Soarers" (same thing?) that have 50-60k. I take for granted that I live in Saskatchewan. I have to drive 100 miles to get the mail.

Most of the Japanese cars I have looked at are the 2.0L turbo. I really have no idea of the serial models. I'm new at this, what with the 1st and 2nd gens, and all that madness. As long as everything is more or less the same (oil, air, fuel filters), brakes, etc. I am happy.

Thanks for the input man. There are some SICK deuces on this site. I can't wait to get me some of that. I'm not entirely new around here, I have an old Toyota 2WD pickup. Yo's rule.

Yeah, I drive 59.2 miles to work 1 way. 118.4 round trip...(197.3km's)
Hopefully, MRQTurbo will see this. He lives in Canada and has an awsome 2. He can elaborate more.

Yes, parted motors, or clips, even complete imported vehicles tend to have around 60k-80k miles (95k km-129k km). I have a few friends who are stationed in Okinawa. I've heard from them as well as many natives from Japan, that the laws only permit vehicles to have a lifespan of up to 129k km's before they aren't permitted for use on their roads anymore. I haven't been able to confirm it, but it seems like the consensus. Here in the US, if it can pass smog, we can drive it into the ground even if the odo reads 999,999, miles.

Ghey? Gay?
What do you think makes a rhd car dangerous?

I really don't want to spend more than 10 grand. I doubt I will have to. But, if the right 2 came along, I'm not all that opposed to dropping the bank. I want something that is basically stock, so I doubt I will have to pay more than 8-9 grand.

Ever try passing a car on a 2 lane road in a RHD car??? Freakin scary. You should be able to pickup a really nice 2 for $10k.

I never even thought about that. Actually, the driving is not too much of a concern. I live in small town Saskatchewan, so I don't really encounter a lot of traffic. I hear you 100% though, and I will definitely keep that in mind. Thanks guys.

My situation changed a little bit last night when I got pulled over by Saskatoon's finest. Apparently you could see "white light" coming from one of the brake lights on my truck. He really didn't like the way my truck "smelled" (you hear me?) either, but I wasn't drinking or nothing. He called the TA, and he gave my truck a once over, and didn't like the rust in my box (god bless those rusted out 1983 Toyota pickups). Now I have to get it all fixed up, and inspected in two weeks. Yeah. Not going to happen. I have been looking for a box for my truck for a year out here.

Commence the crash course in buying an MR2..!

Welcome to TN,

I have a 1991 Turbo RHD MR2 and use it as a daily driver in the summer.

I live in a town of 100,000 and have about 6000 km of driving on it since I have bought it and only gotten into two situations where I was stuck because of my view. You will change the way you drive a little to see better (ie. lane positioning).

As far as low km on JDM cars it comes down to expensive cost of driving and constant safety testing as well as high emission standards.

There were two motors available in Japan the 3SGTE (which was the same as here with minor diffs) and the 3SGE (this gen was never available North America). Get the turbo

Alot of the parts are the same and are available except for the obvious parts such as cables, dash, some wiring, etc.

If you have anymore questions post here or send me a pm

Has anybody actually imported a car from Japan themselves? I have been surfing Japan Auto Direct, and they have a decent selection of 91-92 MR2 turbos.

They put shipping at 180000 yen, which is like 1700 bucks. The cars are cheap though, which makes up for the shipping, but I am unsure how much red tape I will encounter upon an inspection..? I live in SK, so I don't have air care or anything.
Are there any huge expenses, or running around involved in bringing a car from Japan to Canada?

I was looking at importing one but then I found one for sale by a guy who did all the work and daily drove it and then wanted to sell it.

I know there is a couple of sites with exactly what you would have to do I think the biggest cost is getting the car to you. As long with every other company doing a inspection.

There are a few companies that have done it before and will get you the car for a set price that includes everything.

Try terra2imports (BC) and I know that there are a few in the midwest you just have to take the time and search on google
