got the greddy intercooler! and a problem.

whats up guys..i got the greddy intercooler for 710.00 brand new, but the night before i was at the track and during my run in second gear something happened as when the boost goes up it sounds like theres a leak, the boost goes up and down very quickly. Then the motor jirks real bad...now i checked all the hoses they looked fine... The only problem is i ran some 114 octane gas, now i know i dont have a problem with cats cuz i dont have any, but i'm thinking its either a vacuum hose problem or o2 sensor..but the vacuum is okay...20 psi vacuum...so i'm not sure what is wrong..i wanted to ask cuz maybe you guys had the same problem at one time, basically its like the turbo gets cut off, the boost starts going up and down real fast, it kinda sounded like it was leaking from the turbo nipple but it wasnt i checked that hose...thanks..

Well, you probbvly have a leak if you are hearing it

As for 114, there is no reason to be using that and that may be causing some of your driveability issues. You can have too much octane.

My car runs great on 110. I tried 112 ONCE, and the car was totally off... felt terrible.p I did my tuning at 110.

where did you buy your greddy ic for 710?
I wouldnt worry about it if it only happened once, at 2nd and at WOT. it wouldnt be an o2s problem since your in open loop at WOT, meaning the pcm ignores any input from the o2s. does your vac hold 20"hg or does it fluctuate? It might just be knock responce or a lean or maybe even a rich misfire. try pulling a code. a dtc may be set without a mil. since it might be pending. it takes 2 consecutive drive cycles to illuminate the mil.
and where did you buy your greddy ic?

whats up guys...i got good news and bad news...first the good news... i installed the intercooler within 3.5 hours by myself cuz my jacka$$ of a friend lagged, and it works great it runs cooler, spools up faster, and much better throttle response *i love toyotas*, and another thing that problem was a boost leak from one of my hoses it got fixed with the intercooler and the piping. Now the bad news. I ran it yesterday for a little bit and i was disappointed. It ran really rich, i'm thinking it ran lean so the knock sensor detected some minor detonation and the computer retarded timing and ran it rich. So i'm just gonna get the t04 upgrade next week, and go tune it cuz i should be putting a lot more power. Any advice before i slap on a t04, and has anyone had any experiences that resemble mine? cuz i'm kinda confused i mean the intake charge definently dropped and i ran 17psi at night so it was really cold, i dont understand why it would lean out, but i didnt damage anything i only did it in third gear for like 6 seconds... Thanks for the help guys... Mr2's forever!

You did not run lean with a ct-26 turbocharger... it is impossible unless your fuel system failed. As long as it is working, you will be normal-to-rich.

How fresh is your ignition components?
What are your plugs gapped at?
What octane gas are you using?

well, my ignition is pretty old i guess, i only changed the wires and plugs cuz the distributer and rotor looked okay, but i guess i can change those too... and i am using 91 octane gas, but its just weird i guess, maybe its running so rich that i'm losing a lot of power, it doesnt matter i'm gonna go dyno tune it on tuesday and hopefully get some nice numbers... Oh one more thing, does anyone want to trade rims? i have 17" alessio italian rims very clean no scratches i want to trade them with the stock 94-96 MR2 rims, with no scratches... post if your interested...thanks

Turbo MR2s eat ignition components.

I use TOYOTA cap, rotor and wires and I replce them every year.

I would suggest NGK copper plugs (NGK 6097) gapped at .028 for above 15 psi of boost. I imagine your plugs are gapepd to sepc of .031-.032 which is too big for big boost. I change plugs every 3000 miles.

The 3sgte was designed for better octane fuel than 91. If that is all you have access too, I highly recommend checking out a water injection system as this effectively raises octane while doing all kinds of other wonderful things.

I suspecct what youare feeling is detonation. When that comes on, the ECU retards timing AND adds fuel. It adds fuel to help cool the combustion chamber down which would also cause you to run rich.

Hope this helps.

I would definitely double-check all your recent work.... AKA the intercooler plumbing. Any leaks downstream of the air flow meter will cause the car to run eratically, especially under boost. Also, have you had the timing checked recently? 9/10 of the time, a drivability complaint can be traced back to an ignition problem. It would be a good idea to check (replace) your plugs with the ones suggested in an earlier post.
