noobie about to buy a 91 mr2 i got question

ok now im about to buy a 91 mr2. i went to look at it today and it was decent. the one thing that i am concern is that the fan is always on. the guy said the last owner did some type of modd to the fan so it will help cool the engine but the thing i dont like is that it is always on and its a lil bit loud. have anyone ever heard of this? and another thing. the shift knob, when i play with it on neutral, it feels real tight and gear 1 is like deep up on the top left. is that normal and if not, would it cost alot to get it repaired????

please help!!!

I have heard of cases where a modded engine lid fan is wired up to stay on all the time. THis is the easiest way to install it. It is not that difficult to install a switch inside the cabin to turn it on and off. I have also heard of sensor you can get to tell the fan to kick on when you reach a certain engine temp. YOu will have to do some research.

As for the shift knob, is it about the same level as 3rd and 5th gears. The normal shifting range is somewhat deep. I would say that if you do not hear any wierd noises, do not have any catching while shifting gears, and is the same general place as 3rd and 5th gears then I would say it is fine. Price wise, it is hard to say what would need to be fixed or replaced without looking at it

I would not necessarily say it clicks into gear. When you put it into gear does the car jump foward or is it real easy to start from 1st gear. THere are a lot of factors that play into how easliy a car shifts...i.e. how rough on the clutch the driver is, how hard and if the driver throws the car into gear while shifting.

Do you hear any wierd noises. Have you tried taking the shift boot off and looking at the shift lever linkage

I wouldn't say that it "clicks" when put into gear. The shifter in 2gen MR2's use cables and it kinda has a " notchy" feel.
As for the IC fan in the engine compartment-there is a temp sending unit mounted on the underside of the engine lid, when unplugged, makes the fan run full time. reconnect it and it will only run when the sensor detects a certain amount of heat. Reconnected, you will prolly never see it run. To test, disconnect sensor.
Some guys like to let it run to try and avoid heat soak. Mine is almost completely silent when running. So if yours is loud, the shaft bearings may be on its way out.
Oh, and Welcome to TN!

mr2's are not like most cars, all thats under your shifter is two cables that run to the back of the car. this is why you dont feel that click when shifting into gear. its more of a detached feel
