Well I'm kinda new around here myself but I bet they made n/a MR2's for a few years and into more than one generation. I think if you want any help from the pro's you better be willing to put out a little more info. Like what year/gen, motor? etc are you talking about... Welcome to the forums
well i may be fairly new to mr-2's but in coming into this amazing bit of fun i have been dumped into it. between me and 2 of my friends we have a grand total of 5 mr-2's and so i know for a fact that they have been optioned without any power steering. mine is the n/a 5sfe in a '91 mr-2 and when i first brought it home for me and my friends to look over the first amazement was the lack of power steering. and i have driven my friends and to tell you the truth in all aspects save parking i prefer the non power steering. this is due to the fact that at high speeds i feel that the power steering mr-2 are far too likely to be over steered due to the ease of turning the wheel. i've noticed that the faster you go the tighter the wheel is and it makes high speed turns smooth and rarely taken too hard. if you are unable to turn the wheel fast enough for the turn you are entering then it seems a good signal that that turn needs to be taken just a little bit slower. this is my own $.o2 but between me and my friends one of which has a built 3s-gte motor and one of which has built a v6 into his we all agree that the non power steering ones are preferred. the built turbo one even swapped out for manual steering. so i hope this helps. plus you get more feed back from the road w/o power steering. and anyways this car is far too light to need it hah
As far as I know all MR2's came with elctro hydraulic power steering. What makes you think it doesn't have it?
Oh, and Welcome to TN.
Power steering was an option.

Non-power steering is all fine and dandy until you start running real tires.... then it's a huge pain in the ass to turn at low speeds. I've owned a couple of both... and I prefer power steering for daily driving. On the track it really doesn't matter because like Russ said... the power steering is only active at low speeds.
Running 225/40/17 Toyo T1R's in the front with a Momo tuner wheel and no power steering was a HUGE pain in the ass to navigate parking lots in. Power steering is the ONLY factory option my new MR2 has.... woot.

Yup, like was said, power steering was an option in the USA. It was never available in Canada, and as far as I knew there weren't all that many in the USA that had it either... but alas I'm not in the USA, so I haven't seen all that many of them from down there .

Jeff
It really depends what you bought. It seems like most T-Tops have power steering. Sunroofs are a split. Most hardtops you see will not have power steering. That's a big part of the reasons I snatched my hardtop up.... pretty hard to find one with a PS rack.
I had my P/S go out on me once. And I just can't imaging not having it for low speeds and parking, etc. I can't believe Toyota would build these cars without it. I'm not disputing what any of you have stated, just not a good move on Toyota's part..

Having the power steering go out on a car with power steering is a lot worse than just not having it because you are now fighting against the extra equipment. You'd be surprised... there are a lot of people that pull their power steering. The car has a light enough front end that it really isn't that hard to move the stock tires. I didn't notice it until I bought my second MKII that had power steering.... OHHHH what a difference. Then once I started switching to wider and stickier tires.... I said forget it.... no more of this non-PS crap.
I'm only running 215's up front, so it wasn't that bad. but when it went out, I felt it immediately. especially when i was pulling into the driveway. I don't think I would ever wanna lose it.. yeah, i'm spoiled.
When power steering goes out on a car that is equipped with power steering, you not only need to steer the vehicle, but move all the fluid through the entire system. It is significantly harder than a car designed for manual steering.
There's no way I'd buy an MR2 with power steering if I could get one in the same condition without. Manual steering wins for me.
here here! but thanks for the info about the power steering not being used at higher speeds, thats a smart design but i've had a full size truck lose power steering and oh my god is it worse to turn with broken power steering than none at all. and i am one of those t-top versions without power steering. and the wider stickier tires on the front of an mr-2 are what i got i have 8" wide UHP front tires from toyo and it isnt too bad excpet for like was said those parking lots but hey who doesnt want stronger arms hah.
