question about 3sgte

Hello all just wondering if the jdm 3sgte is a reliable motor. My car currently has the 3sgte and has had quite a few problems already alternator and a few other things that i can imagine going wrong but then it spun a bearing which could be from past life obviously but it only had 40k supposedly who knows though. The car is being repaired now but i plan on using the car for what it is i dont plan on racing at the track but i want to be able to get on it with out worrying about breaking it. Is this just not the car for reliablility or did i just have bad luck. Might just sell it once its been completed maybe thats why there is alot of mr2 3sgte conversions for sale just got sick of fixing them.

well it is a good car it's just an older car, and older cars tend to have problems like that. but i'm not a mechanic, nor am i an owner. I just know that the older cars do have problems like that...

I bought my MR2 from a old man and never had a problem with anything for 8 years... Pay attention who drove it before and You will figure out history of the car and future life of the engine......

Chances are if your car was owned by a younger or irresponsible person, it was beat on quite heavily.

If you keep having major problems it would be in my best advice to just swap the 3SGTE with another 3SGTE, The motors are strong and reliable....if you take care of them and do proper maitenence schedules. I have had my 3SGTE running for about 5-6 months now and I have only put oil into it and it runs like a champ.

For the amount of money swapping the engine would be cheaper then finding another Turbo SW20.

The owner before me bought the motor and had it installed in january 2007 had all reciepts for mileage in and out of shop he only put 200 miles on the car. Once i got it i put around 700 miles and within them I fixed all of the small things that were wrong due to crappy installation. and replaced the passenger side fender and door because they were smashed. hence the reason i got the car for really cheap....or as i thought i dont think he knew anything would go wrong i doubt he knew a bearing would spin.... but who knows what the last guy who had the motor in his car back in Japan did.I love mr2's and this is my second one but first turbo hopefully this will work out for me.

The 3sgte is a very reliable, robust engine. With it's iron block and efficient head, it was built for racing and then tuned DOWN for consumer production. There is a strong aftermarket support for it. .
I would say, that if the engine was rebuilt and then spun a crank bearing soon afterwards, they prolly didn't use a thicker bearing after turning the crank..or they didn't turn the crank at all and it should have been, so the bearing didn't seat correctly. They also might not have torqued the journal caps correctly.
But like ModifierMR said, they just need regular and proper maintainance like any other engine. If you can't repair this engine, I would take his advice.

Yeah now the mechanic changed his mind about rebuilding the motor without telling me he just ordered a used motor for the same price as a rebuild so im pretty pissed about that id rather have a rebuild for the same price as another potential used problem.

Our experience the 3SGTE is utterly reliable & everything you oughtta have in that thing short the Audi V8 someone crammed in. It's the gearbox is the problem, 1 & 2, & nix else, currently. Any help here, anyone?
