One Thing After Another...

just got a 87 aw11, i bought it cheap and it was kinda neglected. so after an altenator and some other misc stuff i keep running in to other probs. the alenator was so rusty that it took me 15 hrs to get it out. got the altenator in and it has a nast "putt" to her. last night i moved the mass air flow next to the intake and added an aftermarket filter, and changed the fuel filter. after i put the battery back in and took it for a drive and the speedo quit working. any one know what or where the cable is located for these? unfortinatly i have never worked on a mid rear car. have owned may toyotas but never a mr2. can some one help me with this?

I don't know a whole lot about the mk1, but I know the 91-92s still had the mechanical speedo, and the unit sits on the top of the tranny, toward the back.

A lot of times, it's just the cable. But sometimes the little plastic speedo gear goes in the tranny. In that case, u have to pull the whole tranny to replace it.

Good luck!

it's a manual cable in all mk1's

it's snaked from the gauges, through the front firewall, down through the front trunk (only a few inches can be seen in the frunk), down under the car, (between the plastic shroudings and the fuel tank), then into the engine bay from below, then comes up kind of along the exhaust manifold, then over the trans. Bolts into the top of the back of the transmission. A lot of the time the cable will not unthread from the drive gear... the drive gear is held in place by a flat piece of metal bolted down by a 12mm bolt. Unbolt the bolt, pull the flat piece of metal out, and (with cable attached is the easiest) pull the sending unit out. Unscrew the cable from the sending unit, being careful not to bend the casing of the threads on the cable side.

AFAIK, the at and mt have the same cable. The sending unit is "one piece", with a plastic gear. If the plastic gear is shot, then there's a chance the plastic receiving end in the transmission is shot too.

Hope you're a little more patient than 6 hours in the future for detailed answers...

3 places=Ebay, the stealership or salvage yard. Salvage yard will be old though and maybe not any better than what you have.
it may also be possible to buy generic weather strip and make your own. Maybe jury rig and use black silicone to seal it. Just a thought.

I hear ya. The stealership wants $280.00 for the T Top seals for the MKII. So I used some black RTV and let it dry before putting the tops back on. It dried with the consistancy of rubber. It was only meant as a temporary fix, but it lasted about ayear. But they're leaking again. Oh well.
Good luck.
