Question What engine model?

Hi Toyota fans =)
I just bought my self a 3S-GTE engine from UK and brought it back home to Norway. I'm doing a complete re-build on this engine and tuning it. But I'm not sure what model the ingine is. The only labels I can see on the engines are the one's on the cam-belt cover that says: 3S-GTE X3 Yamaha. Can anyone help me from here? What model year did the engine come from and what parts can ore can't I use on this engine? And maby someone can tell me if there's any engine numbers on the block of the enginge and what can they mean?

All info will give me a BIG

Yamaha appears to have helped develop the head on this engine. The engine must have a serial number, if so typically the engine numbers are next to these. Try looking on the engine block flange where it bolts to the trans.

A Google search will turn up lots of info on this engine, start with a Wikipedia search.

The 3sgte is the engine that came with the USDM 91-95 turbocharged MR2 . toyomoho is correct about the head. It was built by Yamaha for Toyota.
As far as parts go, all parts for the USDM 3sgte will fit. There sre also tons of aftermarket parts and perfomance upgrade parts for this engine.
I recommend you read the MR2 Power Primer in the sticky on the home page of this MR2 forum. Some good info there.
Oh, Welcome to TN.

Ok. great guys!
I'v google'd the engine specs and read all about it on wikipedia for about two months now and my conclusion is that all parts can't fit. There are two different heads for this engine? Ore there is one head with 8 bolts for the exhaust manifold and there is one with 9 bolts? There's also two different cams for this head. The engine model "split" seems to be arround 92/93?
Great hint about the serial # on the block! I will look it up and try googl it!
Anyone else with more info? Evertything will be greatly taken in!

I think the differences you speak of are between the JDM and USDM. Unless the UK has it's own version. The USDM head has 7 bolts for exhaust manifold. I don't know which version they import to the UK. You will have to make that determination.

Aaahhhh, I see! =) If that's the only difference I can just check if it's a JDM ore a USDM and I can by parts for that engine? The inside is probably the same, pistons, conrods etc...

There was a difference in heads from 2nd gen to 3rd gen 3sgte.

First off, the US MR2 only got the 2nd gen 3sgte from 91 - 95. However, the JDM 3sgte changed to a 3rd gen 3sgte from 93 - 98. The internals are essentially the same, with a few slight changes here and there (like the head, and valve cover, amongst other things).

There are a few easy ways to tell which generation 3s you have. First off, the 2nd gen turbo is a ct26 that says "toyota ct26 right on it. The 3rd gen has the ct20b, which just says "toyota" on it. Another way to tell is to look at the pcv valve. It runs from the valve cover to the intake pipe. If there is a catch can in between there, it's a 3rd gen. If straight line, 2nd gen. Also, the 2nd gen has the huge air flow meter on the intake. 3rd gen uses a map sensor and doeesnt have afm.

Either way, most parts are interchangeable between the generations, as they are essentially the same motor. There are a few exceptions, though. Just do your research before making any huge investments.

Hope that helps you out a bit.
