89 idle issues

alright, here's the deal: 89 non-supercharged 132000 mile mr2. it runs fine until i stop and shut it off for a short period of time. when i start it after it has been shut off for a short time, it does'nt want to start and then idles until it dies. if i take off right away after starting it, it will run fine, the idle is just a bit low. if i start it and just go from point A to point B, it runs like a champ. i just can't run alot of errands or else it will start dying on me. i just changed the plugs a thousand miles or so ago. any ideas?

this may sound strange but, have a friend start the car and rev it up for a little, while u stand behind it and smell the whats coming out of the exhaust. possibly, if it smells lean, u could have a fuel problem, or it could be something as simple as adjusting the tps to idle higher. turning on my a/c (although its not hooked up) makes my 86 idle higher
