Alright, I'll take a shot at this one. I am gonna go by memory, so if anyone knows better, please add or correct me.

The BEAMS 3sge is a vvt-I version of the 3sge engine that was available only in Japan in the '98 - '99 Celica, MR2, and Altezza. It makes 197 hp and has a red valve cover with Beams written on it. It makes a great swap for any '90 - '99 celica or MR2.

The problem is the engine was only produced for 2 years, so they are tough to find and so are usually quite pricey when you do find one. I've heard of a black top beams that only came in the 2000 altezza and made 207hp, but I don't know much about it.

By the way, BEAMS stands for Breakthrough Engine with Advanced Mechanism System.

The only thing I would add is I thought the Beams was also imported to the UK. And I have seen pics of Beams with a black valve cover. But I can't confirm if it was that way originally or painted by the owner.
Do you happen to remember how many ltr displacement they are?

All I know is that BEAMS was an engine produced with Yamaha. Toyota made the engine, but it was Yamaha that tuned it better. The BEAMS 3S-GE engines didn't come out till 1997 and was equipped with VVT-i. It was found in late model MR2 G-Limited and G models, Celica ST202-SSII and SSIII and the Caldina. In 1998, the newer version came out with Dual VVT-i and was found only in the RS200 Altezzas. The "Red Top" you guys are referring to meant that it was one of the first BEAMS engines. The "Black Top" are the newer ones. There was also a "Grey Top" version that was only found in Japanese-Market Rav4s. Even though the engine top is black, it was to differentiate the difference between the "Black Top" Dual VVT-i found in the Altezzas and it only produced around 180hp compared the "Red Top" that only produced 197hp and the "Black Top" that produced 207hp.

Some Specs:
Capacity: 1998 cc (121.9 ci)
Bore x Stroke: 86 x 86 mm (3.39 x 3.39 in)
Intake Valve Diameter: 33.5 mm (1.32 in)
Exhaust Valve Diameter: 29.0 mm (1.14 in)
Included Valve Angle: 44.5 degrees

Hope that helps a bit.
