Axle Problems

I am removing my axles and i was successful at removing the pasenger side axle, but my problem lies in the driver side half shaft one. I unbolted that cover that the axle goes into and then put an air hammer to the axle and the thing will not budge. Any suggestions???????????

What exactly do you mean? Are you talking about removing the axle from the carrier at the hub? From what you said, it sounds like the splines of the axle are frozen to the splines of the carrier. They have a tendency to freeze up over time. The splines rust up and are tough to break, especially if you don't use grease or some never-seize on em.

If the axle won't budge, you're gonna need to use some serious force to break it free. Most transmission shops will have an axle puller that attaches to the hub and forces the axle out, but if you're intent on doing it yourself, there is another way.

Put the hub in a vice, with the axle hanging downward. Have a buddy hold a punch or B+O hammer on top of the axle splines, and commence with beating the top of it till the axle falls out. Try using a softer punch first, like wood or rubber, so as not to damage the threads on the axle. If you have to use steel, and damage the end of the axle, the nut might not thread and you'll have to grind it down enough to where the thread is undamaged. Not a huge deal, but can be a pain, especially if you damage up to the cotter pin hole.

Hope that helps you out a bit. Good luck!

........and next time, be a little more patient than 7 hours for a reply.
