Here I Come MR2

Ok, well heres my story quick and short... I have a 98 Celica GT 5spd 5F-SE that I was planning to swap with the 3S-GTE. I looked over my car as it had been in a wreck (not by me and yes I looked it over before buying..). And with the kind of power I plan on pulling out of this car i'm going to have problems. It has a bent engine mount that I didn't find when I bought it. So I threw out that idea.. I'm gonna buy an MR2 instead. I like the look of these cars and it has my engine right in it...

I am thinking about getting a 3rd gen i think? Like a 91-93 ish.. I like that look. What i'm kinda wondering is, will this be a good engine? or is the next gen a better engine. I really need something with a cast block since I will be putting power into this puppy. I'm going to be going all out (valves, bigger turbo, all the turbo accesories, intercooler setup, crank, pistons, rods, bearings, studs, fuel accessories, suspesion, brakes, tires, trans, all the guages I could ever need (i work at a performance shop that Autometer frequently comes out to to do installs for the purpose of knowing how to install certain guages on different cars so they can answer questions better.) i mean this car will be all out and I plan on running at least 18-20 boost when i'm done) So I will need the strongest block I can get and i'm pretty sure the 3S-GTE comes with a cast block. Is the intake aluminium?

That's pretty much it.. Is this gen of engine a good one? Or should I maybe get a different one.

Thank you guys, i've posted here before about my celica upgrade and had some wonderful help and i'm sure i'll get it on this post to. Thanks alot guys.

Since your going all out (pistons, rods, valves, bigger turbo etc.) I'd say it probably doesn't matter what gen motor. On mr2.com theres a gen 3 sticky with some good info. Maybe some other guys can chime in with better info. Just curious, what power are you looking for?

I would suggest looking into the engine and its history a bit just to learn a bit more about it. If you get a U.S. MR2 Turbo then it will be the second generation of the MR2 (MKII) with the second generation of the 3S-GTE engine. The U.S. motor has 200hp and 200ft-lb, the Japanese version of the gen 2 3sgte has 225hp and 225ft-lb, and in Japan they continued the car past 1995 all the way until 1999. These had the gen 3 3S-GTE, even though the car was still a gen 2 MR2. The MR2 had the gen 3 3S-GTE from 1994 until 1999, and it made 245hp and 245ft-lb. The rods and block are good for whatever you want, They have held up against 700whp. The pistons, valvetrain, turbo, etc will all need to be replaced depending on your goals. The power primer is an excellent starting point, as Piddy posted.

edit: if you do not get the turbo model then the car will have the same engine as your current car, the 5sfe.
