Gen1 Timing Belt on 89 SC MKI

Just wanted to share my experience with swapping out the timing belt on my 89 SC MKI.. This is the first time i have replaced the belt on a SC model engine and wanted to share a few things I came across that i didn't find in any of the BGB's or Haynes manuals.

In order to take the Timing belt ALL the timing belt cover bolts off you HAVE to do the follow since there will be one bold that is IMPOSSIBLE to reach otherwise.

1. The Alternator has to be removed
2. The A/C Compressor has to be removed
3. The A/C Compressor Bracket has to be removed
4. The Alternator Bracket has to be removed

All of it in that order. Then and only then can you get the last one bolt to the Timing Belt cover.

I wish I would have thought in advance and taken pics, but i was so frustrated and pissed off... lol .. i didn't.

Hope this helps anyone who is having to undertake this endeavor.

My baby is back purring as it was..

Timing belts are always so much fun. I'm not familiar with the 1st gens, but the 2nd gen, you have to remove 1 motor mount...among other things

Yes they are..so right you are..

The MKI is the same..as far as the motor mount...

All this stuff I listed is in addition to what you would normally do for a N/A to get it off and replaced..

Things would have gone so much quicker if this info was documented in the repair manual.. but of course it's not.... (sigh).. just made the chore that much more chore-e lol. (i think i just made up a word)..

Hope it helps someone who is staring at taking on this endeavor..
