Hi, I have a JDM 2nd gen 3sgte in my 91 Turbo.. The car runs great, idles smooth, boosts properly etc.. until it goes dead. The car will start right up and idle, and will randomly cut off just SOMEtimes.
I will be driving down the road and will be runnin fine and if i were to throw it in neutral to coast to a redlight it may idle for a sec, then cleanly turn off, but i can just start it up again no problem. Ignition stays on when it goes dead.. Sometimes it is hard to start after running for a little while, but will eventually start.
If i revv the car a little to around 1k or so, itll run fine, just when it idles on its own at 800ish factory idle, it will go dead sometimes. I hope to hell its just a sensor, I will troubleshoot the problem this weekend, but figured u turbo 2 guys have been here and done it, thanks for any advice!

It could be anything. Id say make sure your air intake is properly sealed and that you have no leaks. Also check your ignition components like distributor cap.
Yeah, could be many things. When's the last time you did an ignition tune up? Including plug wires. How 's the flow of fuel? Fuel filter could be clogged and sediment moves around causing interuptions in fuel flow.
Just some of the many things it could be from your description.
first thing you can do to see if a sensor is failing is check it for codes stored. It is free to do and easy.
If you never cleaned inside the throttle body, now is the time. Just spray some tb cleaner on a rag and wipe it inside. Lift the throttle plate and clean it on the back side. You will be surprised how much better it would run just by cleaning a very dirty tb.

Does anyone know where to get a new AFM for my 3sgte? i hear they cost between 250-500.. where would be the best/cheapest place to get a NEW one? Please be somewhere cheaper than toyota..

Besides the stealership, the only place you're gonna find one is salvage yard or if someone has replaced thiers withan aftermarket engine management and selling it.
do you have an aftermarket blow off valve? If so is it vented to the atmosphere?
Yes, im runnin a Greddy Type R BOV.. vented to atmosphere
By the way, the 3sgte is completely stock internally.. only thing aftermarket is the Greddy BOV.. full greddy intercooler kit, rebuilt STOCK CT26, complete NOLOGY plug wire kit, each individually grounded..
I cleaned the MAF/AFM unit as best as possible.. no change.. i popped the black plastic top off the MAF sensor itself, and noticed the small filiment that glides across the black strip on the circuitry was bent to the side, so i bent it back in place as best as possible.. THAT is my reason for NEEding a new AFM.. cause i hate having rigged shit, but had to do so, the car runs.. I'd like to replace the AFM before looking for another cause..
I canot find a AFM to save my life.. well my turbo cars life.. i dont want to cry myself to toyota, though i need the part =(

Reason: im an idiot
Try putting the stock BOV back on sometimes. when there vented to the atmosphere it causes the engine to stall. some people say this never happens to them. others say they cant even start there car when its vented. idk either way but it might be worth a shot i know theres a bunch of threads over at mr2oc.com about this problem. like i said its worth a shot and maybe this way you will only have to spend your money on re routing your greddy BOV back into the stock location rather then like $700 on a new afm from toyota.
Also check all your vacuum lines for leaks. and if you have a boost gauge that reads vacuum make sure its at aprox 20 inches of mercury (in/Hg) at idle.
yes, he's right mine did the same thing i have a greddy BOV that was vented to the atmosphere.
i just put the hose that connects to the bov and the intake but i allso cleaned out the hole intake system
with brake cleaner that drys fast.it was really dirty (black)
but now i can't piss a round town anymore like other cars that have turbos and bov.
whens the last time the distributor was changed...?
the crank (RPM) signal is in the distributor and is the fuel signal from the ECM... When you crank and it DOESNT start... does the Tach move...?
i used to work on Chevy schoolbuses... the would go dead all the time randomly when driving cause the crank sensor intermittently stopped sending
It always ALMOST starts, so it is getting some sort of shitty spark.. but YES.. when it does not start the tach moves, yes cause it is almost starting
Thanks guy, imma check into the crank sensor now.. the engine was just shipped from Japan, and it is a 93, so i have nothing against the 3s of this age having a few probs here and there, cause when it DOES run, it runs great smooth and full of power.
Also, i REALLY need to get my hands on an mr2 repair manual, cuase i have both a 91 na and a 91 T, i keep looking on ebay and im not paying that much from toyota.

[quote=8URBOXR;2409591]Did you try the BOV thing?[/quote
no because i havent got the stock equipment.. i believe i have a vacuum leak because it is showing about -5 on the boost guage at idle and 25ish during average acceleration.. so i know my guage is picking up vacuum, but also think i have a vacuum leak because of the low vacuum at idle. also smells a little rich, not PIG rich, like NO black smoke, but smells like a lil too much gas.
Question, does lack of vacuum cause the car to just cleanly SHUT OFF randomly? cuase im pretty sure that if the car had such low vacuum all the time, that it would never stay alive.. is this true? my guess of a VERY low vacuum woould be no start, or a real shitty idle all the time rite?
