1991 mr2 radio works but you can hardly hear it. not sure if it is a fuse problem between radio and amplifier or actually the amplifier or radio component that is defective? If anyone has had similar problems or could tell me where to start I would appreciate it. We would like to check the obvious before we seek professional help.

Might check the connections on the speakers and head unit it's self. If you can here something then it might just be corrosion or one of them came unplugged. I'd imagine that if the amp burnt out you wouldn't here anything at all, or you'd just not get any low pitches (ie bass)
