'86 MR2 NA, worth....?

Ok, so I just visited a dealership nearby me (used car, slightly shady) and they had a MR2 1986, black, non-supercharged.

Now, it's definatly not a looker, but i really love these cars so it caught my eye.

Sticker was 2850 (which i laughed at)

Here's everything I could tell

miles - 202,000
Black
Sunroof
Power Windows/locks/steering/mirrors
AC
Body kit (don't know what kind)
New rims (maybe bigger)
Decent tread on tires.

ANDDDD... now for all of the bad.

The body kit looks like it bottemed out HARD and there are cracks running from the lower left and right of the friend end, back towards the doors. It's solid, but definatly cracked.

The driver door needs to be pulled UP to close, or it scraps the body a bit (the body is scratched up)

No radio

AC = not cold

Batter was dead when we tried to start it, it's been sitting a bit

Power window electrical problems... Driver side auto down, and normal up worked, passenger side from the driver door works fine. Passenger side doesn't work at all.

Power locks are broken, can't lock car.

Wipers don't work

Power steering wasn't working, probably just needed fluid.

Hood only opens with "help"

The center console leather piece isn't secured, and lifts right off..

Speedometer needle "wiggles" while driving, and could be off.

Carpeting on the passenger side was messed up a little

Dome light was broken

Aliginment pulled a bit (low tire pressure could be at fault)

When accelerating it "squeled" a little.

BUT... then engine sounded immaculate and it ran very nicely on a length test drive.

So when I got back his starting offer was 1850... I talked him down another 500 to 1350, but walked away...

What do you think it's worth? How much of that is easily fixable? I'm really just looking for a get around town car, and the accessory problems don't bother me to much... or the body damage....

(yay first post)

$800 or walk away.

Personally I wouldnt offer more the $400. I recently picked up a black 86 N/A for my friend for $350 and it is in much better shape then the one you describe.

Dealers go by the NADA and then they bost thier sticker prices, dealers have no idea what our cars are worth they will probably haggle with ya about it.

If I lived near you I would go to the dealership and haggle it down for you. You have to know your stuff when talking to these guys or you will never win.

again...$800 or no deal, its not worth even $1000.

Yep, the bluebook value on it in GOOD condition is barely $1,100.00, which by your description is far from that.

How bad do you want it? I would look around before locking in on one car. They do not have power steering so that is why it was not working. More than likely the squeal was the altenator as the vents in the hood over the motor drip water on the alternator and it ruins the bearings and can also make the belt slip. The leather around the shifter is a common problem. Of all the things you listed most of them are common problems considering its age. The only major probs would be the body kit (I don't think they ever made one that looks good) and the door sag. However both of them can be fixed. Also depends on what you plan on doing with the car. Look at what is wrong and compare it to what you plan on replacing. Like if the suspension is wore out and you plan on lowering it and upgrading the shocks then it really does not matter about the fact that the suspension is wore out. Check it out and think about it. Look on mr2oc.com and you will probable get a better idea of what the car is worth and you will probable find a better deal there. Goodluck

Most of the things he listed are not common problems for their age. Its problems that come from years of abuse by a teenage child. The MR2s in his area cost alot of money, they are overpriced peices of shit. He actually came up here and I drove him to check out an MR2 last night. Unfortunately that one wasnt much better but its only $400 instead of $2000+.
