AW11 is the first generation MR2 (85-89 in US), SW20 is the second generation (90-99). They are the chassis codes.

AW11 is the 85-86 Models of the first Generation.... AW15 is the 87-89 Models of the First Generation.

To go into more detail.

A.W.1.1
"A" stands for the engine block model (4AGE)
"W" Stands for the Chassis Code (its a W chassis as in Mid/Rear)
"1" Stands for the first generation of this model.
"1" stands for Revision number

Uhh... no.

AW10 = 3A-powered 1st generation MR2 (3A-U -- Japan only)
AW11 = 4A-powered 1st generation MR2 (4A-GE or 4A-GZE)

SW20 = 3S-powered 2nd generation MR2 (3S-GE or 3S-GTE -- North America: 3S-GTE only)
SW21 = 5S-powered 2nd generation MR2 (5S-FE -- North America only)

ZZW30 = 1ZZ-powered 3rd generation MR2 (or MR-S) (1ZZ-FE -- All markets)

There is no AW15 chassis code, there never was. The only time AW15 ever appeared was in the VIN for 1st generation N/A MR2's. It was used for all years (not just 87-89) in North America only (1985-1989). All of these cars are still AW11's as per their model code and chassis number.

These are facts.

SW21 = Non-turbo 5S-FE
SW22 = Turbo 3S-GTE

Was there an SW20 VIN, maybe in relation to the non-turbo 3S-GE? Just wondering

AW15 VIN is N/A, AW16 VIN is Supercharged

No.

SW20 = 3S-powered second generation MR2
SW21 = 5S-powered second generation MR2

SW20 = 3S-GE and 3S-GTE (3S-GE not offered in North America)
SW21 = 5S-FE

There is no such thing as an SW22, AW15 or AW16. Not by chassis code anyways, what's in the VIN is an identification of features/options the car has, and Toyota uses them to differentiate between different models of the same chassis.

Chassis codes are not VIN's.

BEAMS are 3SGE engines. They were sold in Japan.

3SGEs were used worldwide in Celicas, MR2s, Altezzas, Caldina, and the Lexus IS200. Maybe more.

For the MR2, everywhere except North America had the 3S-GE. In North America we got the 5S-FE instead, it has more torque (2.2L versus 2.0L), which appeals more to the North American buyer.

We did have the 3S-GE in the Celica though in the late 1980's.

The Beams engine you are referring to is the one from the Altezza RS200 I take it, which was a newer dual VVT-i version of the 3S-GE.

Do you know what the stock HP and torque ratings are for the Beams? And besides the obvious VVT-i and turbo, what are the differences from the 3sgte. Does it bolt up to the 3sgte tranny?
