If your a half way decent driver, you shoulda out run the Scion easily.. Before you do any modifications, you should check your ignition components.Including the plug wires. And all other systems should be in good shape.
In stock form, you should be any where between 7-10 psi of boost.(depending on the condition of your engine). Our cars have fuel cut at 12 psi. (which can be illiminated). If you wanna know exactly how much boost your running, you will need a boost gauge.
Read the MR2 Power Primer in the sticky on the 1st page of this forum.. You can easily get to 280hp.
There's alot of aftermarket support for the 3sgte. It just depends on your goals. How much HP you want, what you're gonna do with the car(autoX, drag, street), and how deep your pockets are!

If your MR2 Turbo can't beat a Scion TC then:

a) learn the power curve of the car and practice makes perfect
b) Might want to take a good look at that engine and make sure it is healthy.

Stock MR2 Turbos a pretty fast and beating a Scion TC shouldn't be a problem. My All-Trac beats Scions and all its got is a filter and exhaust and pleanty of maintance done.
