Mating Engines

I have an 16 Valve EFI engine in my 93 corolla and I have a MKI MR2 and I want to know if mating engines is worth it, I was planning on using the bottom half block of the EFI and the top half of MR2 to make it one. Is it legal and will it pass smog, anyone with answers is greatly appreciated thanks.

What type of engine is in the Corolla? If it's a 7AFE, you can use that block and the head from your MR2's 4AGE to create a 1.8L engine that would perform better than either of the original engines. That's the only option that I can think of that's worth doing.

It will technically fail California smog because the 7A block was never used in the MR2s. You could probably put it in a pre-93 Corolla because they used both the 4AGE and 7AFE. You wouldn't be able to legally put it in your '93 'rolla because the 4AGE was only used on the previous generation.

the engine in the MR2 is blown, and I wanna get it running again while I save for the 3SGTE. Intead of buying a replacemnet.

it's A 7AFE. and when you say the head do you mean the the cover of 4AGE or the manifold.

Block == lower part of engine with crank, pistons, rods, etc.

Head == upper part of engine with valves, springs, cams, distributor, etc.

Basically, you will unbolt the engines in half and put the top part of your MR2 engine on the bottom part of your Corolla engine. EDIT: You will use both manifolds from the MR2 engine.

What happened to blow the MR2 engine? It might not be in good enough shape for the swap.

Ghostyman has a good point.
If you blew the MR2 engine, you should have the head checked out by a machine shop. I just went thru this with my "91 Turbo. I rebuilt the block(honed, ringed , replaced 1 piston and all connecting rod bearings). I cleaned up the head and did a visual inspection and the head seemed fine but after putting it back together, alot of noise from the head-valve guides , seats and seals worn..and alittle bit of warpage.

^^^ Yep!

If the engine....

Overheated... you might have a warped head.

Was starved of oil... your camshaft is probably tore up at the very least.

Dropped a rod or similar... you might have metal shavings in your head.

not exactly sure but looks like the rod busted, not worth rebuilding as for the corolla I've pushed it to 6000 rpms couple of times in 3rd, 4rth and 5th gears but i try to keep under 5000 rpms. How much would a super charged engine cost me for the MR2, I've cheked out the JDM 3SGTE and that average $2,500 give or take for a good one with 30 or 40 thousand miles on it.

Oh gosh, I've been living on the mainland for almost 25 yrs. Have you been to the Islands? I don't usually hear people use the term "the mainland".(except for the locals back home)
I do like it here. Wide open spaces, 4 seasons and the ability to get in the car and drive anywhere in the continental USA.
oh , and if you're wondering why your post says I edited it. I didn't. I accidentally hit edit instead of quote..excuse please..

I've never been... actually, it's the only state I haven't visited. I've driven to every other state, including Alaska. But I live in Santa Cruz and we get tons of Hawaiians coming through for the surfing and whatnot. I've got a buddy who goes to the islands every year and brings me back a bunch of $3 Locals sandals to take care of my footwear needs for the year.

To the OP... 6k in 5th gear? I hope you've got a slipping clutch or some Z rated tires. Check chicoraceworks.com for good prices on 3SGTEs; I think they sell a JDM longblock for $1400.

My advice would be to swap another 4AGE into your MR2. You should be able to pick up a 4AGE shortblock pretty cheap. That will give you good practice for swapping in the 3SGTE if you save up for it. That will also allow you to keep the Corolla running while you're working on the MR2. If you don't have a 3rd car, don't even think about doing anything to the Corolla until you get the MR2 running.

(I also have a MR2 and a Corolla, although different generations -- I've got a 91 MR2 and a 89 'rolla)
