i'm new to this forum and I just wanted people's opinion about these two cars.
mr2 turbo
wrx STi
I'm looking for a mr2 right now but by June if I can't find one, I might be able to get the STi.
Has anybody with a modded mr2 race an STi before..( I know that a STi would rape mr2 stock vs stock) and does the mr2 does well with stock? i'm really new to toyota b/c i used to own a Honda and i was in the whole Honda scene and I want to start something new
mr2 easilly modded..... and luv the rwd mid engine.. you'll luv driving it a lot more then an sti from my perspective.. nice tite cockpit and 300hp is easilly achievable from my understanding:p
u cant compare the two cars..they are two totally different cars in every aspect almost (2 dr vs 4dr...rwd vs awd...sports car vs sedan...price range....age of car).....u just need to ask urself what it is ur looking in car.....
btw....a stock mr2 is slowass....IMO....but the fun factor of the car more then makes up for it.....
yeah, totally not the same car at all. I'd never consider an STI unless I needed a 4 seater. You can't beat mid engine RWD 2 seater IMHO. Love the MR2, wouldn't trade it for anything anywhere near it's price range.

if u comparing speed or performance u can get a mr2 turbo with a boost controller and i think u should be running as fast as a STI. i dont really know, i've just been hearing things.
STi rape an MR2T ... i don't know about that statement. i'm sure it could beat an MR2T (stock) but with almost a decade of technology i would hope so ...
anyway, as it was well stated before, you can't really compare the two cars. they fulfill 2 separate niches. personally, i like the STi - a helluva lot better than the mighty EVO VII everyone seems to be jocking - but it still doesn't inspire anything from my soul the way the MR2 does.
it will all come down to what you want from your car. i think the biggest weak points of the MR2 are it's carrying capacity, age and that damned AFM. i've never driven an STi, so i can't speak on it.
Since you are looking at the WRX STI, does that mean you have test driven the Evolution? The Evo/STI are very different animals than the MR2, the MR2 though is fun at speeds far below those where the Evo/STI get interesting.
If you can afford it, Go for the STI. It'll be a brand new car so you know you won't have problems for a while and if anything does come up there's always warrenty. If you do not have a daily driver and plan on driving the car year round...STI would be perfect
I have driven just about everything under the sun working as a wholesaler, and for the worlds largest cadillac, hummer and saab dealership, amazing things get traded in. The sti is an amazing car, incredibly fun to drive and unbelieveably responsive. the 2.5t is amazing fun, however when sitting in the car not foot to the floor, its, well, blah. its a 4 door family sedan with cheap new age plastic interrior. the looks are nice for a 4door, but when i look at the car, all i see is the rally potential, and the AWD system and the numbers, i dont even see the car. (better then the evo all around in fun, looks, and performance. imho after driving both, as well as a modified one my friend owns)
now an mr2? i see sex when i look at the car, its style is amazing, when your sitting in it, the interior is cozy, you know your in a sports car, the gages are different, you feel like your doing 90 when your at a stoplight. and when you are moving, you feel the punch from behind, the supurb handling of a MR layout. it is a completely different experiance.
now your looking at 10+ years of technilogical advancement, a larger engine, and overall age and wear and tear on the vehicle, this can be overcome with money, think about it, a nice clean mr2 for 8k, or a sti for 35k, with 27k in mods to an mr2, you would have a monster. i dont think my dream mr2 would cost me 35k fully done up.
STi I was very very pleased with the power! it was great. Gas bill well umm I drive spiritedly I get like 17-18mpg.. i drive like a granny i get 18-19mpg... i drive like i stole it and i drop to 16mpg... But yea the ride is STIFF. VERY STIFF. I bounce out of the seats on like every bump. Handling characteristics of the STi are completely different than the MR2...
But yea thats just some of my opinions on the STi... But yea two cars are really different. I mean what are you looking for? Sti being 4 door can fit lots of stuff etc... (down side is the rear seats DO NOT fold down... well mine didn't 2004 model.. gayest thing ever having the dealership trying to figure out what was wrong till we came to a conclusion it wasn't possible to fold them down lol)
But yea if I had to pick I'd rather go for the MR2 for drive. Its much more fun to drive, handling, etc.
If your looking for convience etc then I'd prolly say the STi.
If you have specific questions on either cars let me know.
there is simply no compare for the $$$.........
The mr-2 is only at best in great stock shape 8,000.00
And with the amount of money a new car costs, u could do alot of friggin' modding.
But figure your payments too... no payments, and a nice car!@!
Say u put 300.00 a month into your mr2... thats 3,600 a year that you could mod your car with. or for minor repairs. 3,000.00 could make a factory mr-2 into a low 13 to a high 12 second car!! Depending on what you did... I personally would have a mildly fast car that I am completely satisfied with, than a really fast car that I am somewhat satisfied with.
I love the WRX-STI..... I wouldn't mind having one myself. I have driven them, and have thought about buying one... But I am sorry, faster stock or not... I wouldn't give up anything for my MR-2 but maybe a turbo Lotus Elise... and even then I would have to think about it for a bit
i raced an sti two weeks ago, only and only to see how an MR handles an allwheel, i have stock rims and tires, and i got from 0-60 ft, like .08 seconds faster, after first and half of second gear it left me, (im runnig 9 psi.)
